The Pan American Championships are held every three of four years during non-Pan American Games years and feature the best wrestlers in North, Central and South America. The U.S. team was comprised of winners from 2001 University National Freestyle Championships (April 4).
Hrovat's second-place finish qualifies him for the 2001 World Team Trials (June 21-24) in Cincinnati, Ohio. A top-three finish in Cincinnati will place Hrovat on the U.S. National team, while a first-place finish will qualify him to compete in the World Championships (Sept. 26-29) in New York, N.Y.
Q U O T E S
Andy Hrovat
On the Pan American Championships ... "I am pretty happy with how I wrestled. Romero was probably the best guy I have ever faced, but I met my goal of finishing in the top three."
On the weather in Santa Domingo ... "It was really humid. Before our matches all of us were just drenched in sweat and the mats were slippery. The referees kept stopping the match to wipe up the sweat. The building itself was open too, it just had a roof."
On the World Team Trials ... "I have been training really hard and have dropped a weight class in hopes of finishing in the top four. Whatever happens, the experience will be good for me."
U-M Head Coach Joe McFarland
On the Pan American Championships ... "I am very proud of Andy. He has trained hard since the end of the season and this experience will be invaluable to him. Any time someone has an opportunity to wrestle on the international level, they are going to improve and probably gain some confidence. I think he has also proved that he can be a successful wrestler after college and I am expecting great things from him this coming season."
