For their accomplishments on the water, Hickey, Johnson and Marten were all named to the CRCA All-Central Region first team. Laurel Donnell-Fink (Lansing, Mich./Okemos HS) was named to the CRCA All-Central Region second team. While this is the first time Hickey, Marten and Donnell-Fink have earned the honor, Johnson has been named to the regional first team each year of the award's three-year history.
For the second consecutive year, Rothstein was named the Central Region Coach of the Year. He led the team to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships in addition to winning the second consecutive Big Ten Conference championship. Rothstein, a two-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, is one of five candidates eligible for CRCA National Coach of the Year honors.
For their accomplishments off the water, Hickey, Marten and Kate Maxim (St. Helena Island, S.C./Langley HS) were named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes. Hickey's selection is her third in the three-year history of the award. She is the only Michigan rower to earn the distinction more than once in a career. Marten and Maxim are both on the list for the first time.
Michigan also had 15 rowers named to the Academic All-Big Ten team. Sera Coppolino (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy), Melanie Duncan (St. Catherines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill HS) and Hickey all earned their third selection to the team. Joining them for 2001 are Jenny Bryant (Wainfleet, Ontario/Lakeshore Catholic), Christina Ceo (Saline, Mich./Saline HS), Donnell-Fink, Liz Glenn (Houston, Texas/Phillips Academy), Caroline Gregory (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS), Kristine Johns (Victoria, B.C./Mount Douglas), Johnson, Erin Kopicki (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS), Maxim, Christina Meyer (Saline, Mich./Saline HS), Liz Nelson (Newton, Mass./Newton North HS) and Sophie Roberge (Mallorytown, Ontario/Thousand Island).
The CRCA All-America and All-Region awards are designed to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains. The criteria include meeting eligibility rules as defined by her institution, participating in at least 75 percent of the season's races in the first varsity boat, and the student-athlete's head coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.
For each region, 12 rowers and, if nominated, a coxswain received first team honors, with the same number receiving second team honors. The CRCA All-America first and second teams will be selected by the regional chairpersons following the NCAA Championships from the rowers who have received All-Region first team honors.
The National Scholar-Athlete award is designed to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains. The criteria include meeting eligibility rules as defined by her institution, participating in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility, participating in at least 75 percent of the season's races in the varsity boat, the student-athlete's head coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA and the student-athlete must have a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade-point average through the fall semester of the current season.
