Wolverines Close Hawaii Classic with Loss to Wildcats

HONOLULU -- Despite staying with No. 19 Kansas State most of the way, the University of Michigan volleyball team fell in three games (30-25, 30-22, 30-21) to the Wildcats on Sunday (Sept. 2) in the teams' final match of the Hawaiian Airlines Classic. Michigan's Erin Moore (Tiffin, Ohio/Columbian HS) recorded nine kills in the match to post a team-high 32 kills in the three-match weekend. Her overall efforts, including a .275 attack percentage, 11 digs and six blocks, earned her a spot on the all-tournament team.
In the match, Michigan (0-3) stayed with the Wildcats in the first game. The teams battled back and forth before Kansas State (1-2) took the lead for good at 14-13. Michigan put together a late rally but Kansas State prevailed 30-25.
In a repeat of the first game, Michigan stayed close to the Wildcats and had the score tied at 12-12 before giving up four consecutive points. Again, the Wolverines battled back to close the margin to one point at 16-15. Kansas State put together six consecutive points before winning 30-22.
In game three, Michigan's offense struggled again and the Wolverines were down 18-10 before closing the gap to 20-15. The Wildcats then scored six of the next eight points on their way to a match-ending 30-21 win.
The Wolverines return from Hawaii to host the ninth annual All Sport Challenge Friday and Saturday (Sept. 7-8), welcoming Eastern Michigan, Georgia and Pittsburgh to Cliff Keen Arena. The tournament begins with a match between Eastern Michigan and Georgia at 5 p.m. Friday, with the Wolverines taking on Pittsburgh at 7:30 p.m.
NOTES
• Freshman Carrie Ritchie (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive HS) tallied a team-high 10 digs in the match against Kansas State.
• Chantel Reedus (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) recorded a team-high 10 kills in the match for a total of 25 on the season.
