Wolverines Extend Winning Streak to Five Games

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The No. 4 University of Michigan field hockey team extended its winning streak to a season-high five games on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30), downing the Ball State Cardinals 5-1 in a non-conference matchup at the BSU Turf Field.
The Wolverines (8-2, 2-0 Big Ten) netted the game's first goal under five minutes in and never looked back, building a 3-0 lead in the contest's first 20 minutes. Sophomore defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston Texas/The Kinkaid School) got U-M on the board at 30:28, scoring on a penalty corner opportunity with help from seniors Ali Balmer (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata HS) and Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, South Australia/Westminster). Sophomore forward April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) gave Michigan a two-goal advantage at 20:45 and Johnson made the score 3-0 with an unassisted marker at 13:09.
Ball State (4-5, 1-2 MAC) scored its only goal with 8:37 left in the first half when Afton Hess beat senior goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich.) on a penalty corner.
Redshirt freshman Jenny Zangara (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills HS) opened the scoring in the second half, netting her first career marker at 21:52, while Fronzoni completed her first multi-goal game of the season with a tally at 18:52.
Tasch made two stops in the win as Michigan outshot the Cardinals by a 22-6 margin.
Michigan will remain on the road, traveling to East Lansing, Mich., on Thursday (Oct. 4) to face archrival Michigan State in a 7:30 p.m. Big Ten affair before returning home to host Harvard on Sunday (Oct. 7, 1 p.m.).

• Stephanie Johnson tallied her seventh and eighth goals of the year, establishing a career high for markers and points in a campaign. Her previous high was 6-012, set in 1999. Johnson took over the team lead in goals (8) and points (16) and has at least one marker in each of her last four games.
• Catherine Foreman picked up her 51st career assist and is now six helpers away from the Michigan career assists mark, held by Courtney Reid (56 from 1997-2000).
• Michigan has won eight of its last nine games, including a season-high five straight.
• The Wolverines have held opponents to 10 shots or fewer in each of the last nine games.
• April Fronzoni posted her first multi-goal game of the season and has four markers in her last three games. Prior to the 10-1 win over Indiana (Sept. 23), Fronzoni was held scoreless.
