ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team opened its home season with a 1-0 win over Cleveland State on Friday (Sept. 7) at Elbel Field, extending its winning streak to three games, the longest in the program's varsity history.
Junior Jody Keeling (Odessa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) had the first shot of the game, and it resulted in the only goal of the game. Senior captain J.J. Kern (Trenton, Mich./Lake Orion HS) broke down the left side and centered the ball to Robert Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit), setting up a quick pass to Keeling, who sent it past goalkeeper James Kryger to put the Wolverines up 1-0 just two and a half minutes into the game. The goal was Keeling's first of the season.
Freshman midfielder Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) had three of the four shots on goal for the Wolverines, two in the first half of the game, to head up Michigan's offensive effort, but was stopped on each attempt by Kryger.
Each team collected 30 fouls during the game. Michigan's first yellow card of the season came with 37:30 left in the first half when Robert Turpin took a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Cleveland State's Mike Milcetich matched the Wolverines' total when he received a yellow card with 15:28 left in the second half on a tripping call.
The momentum seemed to swing in favor of Cleveland State in the second half, when the Vikings peppered the Wolverines with 10 shots. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) made four saves, two in the second half of the game, to keep the Vikings off the board and give the Wolverines their third straight win and second shutout in a row.
The Wolverines will look for their fourth straight victory Sunday (Sept. 9, 2 p.m.) when they open Big Ten Conference play against Penn State at State College, Pa.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On scoring the early goal ... "I hate scoring early because we're a young team and I don't want our guys getting lazy and giving up a goal."
On goalkeeper Joe Zawacki ... "Joseph is a very athletic goalie. He's the type of goalie who can keep us in a game with his athleticism and his field presence."
On the speed of U-M's attackers ... "I like our speed up front. If we can get Robert (Turpin) isolated, we can get them flanked because of his great speed. That's what happened on the first goal. J.J. Kern got the corner and threw it out front where Jody Keeling threw it in the net."
