Wolverines Post Victory Over DePaul in Dual Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team collected a 5-2 victory Saturday (Jan. 19) in its dual season opener at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (1-0) won the doubles point and four of the six singles matches to win their third straight home and season openers under head coach Mark Mees.
Michigan won a closely contested doubles point, earning the deciding victory in a tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot. Senior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./N.D. Independent Study) defeated Jevgenji Cariov and Andy Michael of DePaul by a 10-8 score in the tiebreaker to earn a 9-8 victory in the match and gain the doubles point for the Wolverines.
Sophomore Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) got Michigan off to a fast start, taking a commanding 8-0 match at No. 3 over DePaul's Sam Davidson and Dave Pitsch. The Blue Demons took the No. 1 doubles match, 8-5, as Andy Michael and Robert Kurek defeated juniors Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS).
The Wolverines won four of the six singles matches, with DePaul taking the top two matches. Jackson and Novak won straight-set matches at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. Freshman David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskolu) clinched a victory with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Sam Davidson at No. 6. Lockin added a three-set win as his opponent retired in the final set to close out the match.
Michigan hosts California-Irvine tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 20) at the Varsity Tennis Center beginning at 10 a.m.
