U-M Takes Fifth Place at National Dual Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team battled back from a 22-19 loss to sixth-ranked Iowa State in the consolation semifinals of the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals on Sunday (Jan. 20) to upset third-ranked Oklahoma 21-19 in the fifth-place match.
Michigan repeated its fifth-place performance from last season at the National Duals in impressive fashion, bouncing back from a 13-0 deficit to the Sooners after the first three matches by winning the next six bouts. The Wolverines forfeited the final heavyweight match, giving Oklahoma six team points and making the final score 21-19.
Recording big wins for Michigan were eighth-ranked Mike Kulczycki (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward HS), who earned an upset victory over Oklahoma's fourth-ranked Jared Frayer by a 7-2 margin at the 149-pound weight class; 13th-ranked Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./North HS), who scored two points in the overtime period of the 165-pound match to upset fifth-ranked Robbie Waller, 6-4; and senior captain Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edward HS), ranked fifth by InterMat, who upset second-ranked Josh Lambrecht by a 5-2 margin at 184 pounds. Sixth-year senior Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS), ranked second at 174 pounds, recorded a fall over Oklahoma's 14th-ranked Michael Barger at the 4:23 mark to extend his consecutive win streak to 26 matches.
In the morning consolation semifinal, the Wolverines lost to Iowa State in a close battle that came down to the final match. Michigan won five of the individual matches, but bonus points by the Cyclones, including falls by No. 1-ranked Joe Heskett at 165 pounds and No. 1 Cael Sanderson at 197 pounds, proved to be the difference as Iowa State took the team victory. Fifth-year senior Matt Brink (Muskegeon, Mich./Fruitport HS) made his return to the mat after missing the first nine duals due to injury, but he was unable to stop the Cyclones' momentum and lost a 6-2 decision to 20th-ranked Mark Knauer.
The Wolverines will return home to Ann Arbor next weekend to open up the Big Ten dual meet season with a pair of meets against Minnesota and Purdue. On Friday night (Jan. 25), Michigan will square off against top-ranked Minnesota, the defending national champion and 2001 and '02 National Duals winner, at Crisler Arena at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday (Jan. 27), Michigan will welcome the Purdue Boilermakers to Cliff Keen Arena in a meet set to begin at 1 p.m. Tickets are available in advance for the Minnesota match.
