ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team stayed perfect in dual match season play, defeating Western Michigan 7-0 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The win marks the Wolverines' 25th consecutive victory over the Broncos.
The Wolverines (3-0) began the afternoon by taking all three doubles matches to earn their first point of the day. Juniors Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) proved to be too much for Western Michigan's Dan Grupp and Ryan Maarschalk, winning easily 8-4 at the No. 1 spot. Soon after, sophomore Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wisc./Nicolet HS) and senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) secured the doubles point for Michigan with an 8-6 win at No. 3.
Michigan dominated the singles matches, winning all seven matches in straight sets. Senior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) had no problem taking care of his opponent at the No. 2 position, giving up only two games on his way to a 6-1, 6-1 win. Senior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) gave the Wolverines their third point by defeating Western Michigan's Ravi Pathanjali 6-1, 6-2 in the day's top singles match. Freshman David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varsberg Gymnasieskolu) won his match at the No. 6 spot 6-4, 6-4 to close out the day and give Michigan a clean sweep over Western Michigan.
Michigan closes out its homestand next weekend, hosting Tulsa on Saturday (Feb. 2) and Pennsylvania on Sunday (Feb. 3). Both matches are set to start at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center.
