The lone victory for the Wolverines came in one of the closest races of the day as senior Jeremy Schneider (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover HS) edged teammate Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) in the 400-meter dash, 49.44 to 49.47. Schneider and Okenwa also teamed together with junior Kevin Lamb (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett HS) and sophomore Christopher Yee (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) on the 4x400-meter relay, which posted a runner-up finish with a time of 3:19.58.
In the field events, the Maize and Blue received second-place finishes from senior Brent Sheffer (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) in the pole vault and sophomore David Malonsen (Lynwood, Calif./Mayfair HS) in the long jump. Sheffer cleared 16-0 1/4 on the pole vault while Malonsen covered 22-8 3/4 in the long jump.
In the 200-meter dash, the Wolverines placed three runners among the top four in Lamb, sophomore Anthony Beal (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) and sophomore Dustin Gress (Novi, Mich./Farmington HS). Lamb's time of 22.48 placed him second overall to Nduka Awazie of Eastern Michigan, while Beal and Gress finished third and fourth, respectively, with times of 22.84 and 23.09.
The only down note for the Maize and Blue on Saturday afternoon was the early departure of junior captain Derrick Applewhite (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS), who did not finish the 60-meter high hurdles after pulling a hamstring. Applewhite, who redshirted last year due to injury, will be questionable for the Indiana dual meet next week.
Michigan will head to the road to compete against Indiana University on Saturday, Jan. 12, in Bloomington, Ind. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse.
