CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team continued its perfect dual meet season with a 29-9 win over Cleveland State on Saturday (Jan. 5) at CSU's Woodling Gymnasium. The Wolverines won eight of the 10 individual matches in the victory.
Michigan (4-0) took the early lead after back-to-back wins by senior captain Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edward HS) and junior Kyle Smith (Butte, Mont./Butte HS). With the meet starting at 184 pounds, fourth-ranked Hrovat squared off against Joe Phillips and earned the 9-3 decision victory. Building on the Wolverines' lead, ninth-ranked Smith earned a 7-5 decision over Stipe Miocic at 197 pounds to give Michigan the 6-0 advantage.
At heavyweight, fifth-year senior Aaron Walter (Jackson, Mich./East Jackson HS) started in his second consecutive dual meet, but 17th-ranked Russ Davie pulled out a 6-0 decision over Walter to put the Vikings on the board, cutting the Wolverines' lead to three points.
At the 125-pound weight class, 13th-ranked A.J. Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) earned the 6-2 decision victory over Rocco Mansueto, and at 133 pounds, 10th-ranked Foley Dowd (Howell, N.J./The Peddie School) narrowly edged 14th-ranked Phil Mansueto by a 3-2 margin.
For the second consecutive night, the Wolverines did not weigh in a wrestler at 141 pounds, giving Cleveland State's 15th-ranked Nick Boucher the forfeit victory. With the six points added to the Vikings' team score, Michigan's lead was cut to 12-9.
The Wolverines cruised through the final four matches with impressive victories by junior Mike Kulczycki (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward HS), freshman Ryan Bertin (Broadview Heights, Ohio/St. Edward HS), senior Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./North HS), and sixth-year senior Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS). Kulczycki came out strongly in the 149-pound match, earning a 18-8 major decision over Anthony Coleman. At 157 pounds, eighth-ranked Bertin earned his first dual meet fall, pinning Cleveland State's Mike Smith at the 4:59 mark in the bout.
