2002 FBL vs. Iowa -- Postgame Notes

Today's announced attendance of 111,496 fans is the sixth largest crowd in the history of Michigan Stadium, the largest crowd for a Michigan homecoming game and the largest crowd Iowa has ever played in front of.
Today's 34-9 loss against Iowa was Michigan's worst homecoming loss since the Wolverines fell 39-6 to Minnesota on Oct. 16, 1937. The loss snaps a streak of seven straight homecoming victories, and U-M has won 31 of its last 34 homecoming games. It is also the second straight game that Iowa has won as Michigan's homecoming opponent (24-23, Oct. 20, 1990).
Junior/sophomore punter Adam Finley attempted his first career field goal in the third quarter, connecting on a 40-yard kick.
Senior/junior quarterback John Navarre had a career-long 39-yard rush in the third quarter. The play led to a 40-yard field goal by Adam Finley. Navarre led the Wolverines in rushing with 18 yards on five carries.
Junior tailback Chris Perry scored on a one-yard run at the end of the first half. The touchdown was his eighth rushing touchdown of the season and the 15th of his career.
Fifth-year senior Cato June recorded a season-high eight tackles against Iowa. His previous high was six stops against Washington and at Notre Dame.
Sophomore cornerback Marlin Jackson recorded his 14th pass breakup of the season to move into a tie for second all-time on the Michigan season PBU list. Charles Woodson (1995-97) holds the record with 15 PBUs in 1996.
Fifth-year senior outside linebacker Victor Hobson registered 11 tackles for his third double-digit tackle game of the season and the fifth of his career. Hobson had a team-high eight tackles and one TFL in the first half against the Hawkeyes.
Senior cornerback Jeremy LeSueur tied a career high with eight tackles against Iowa. LeSueur recorded eight stops against Purdue (Oct. 19) earlier this season.
In his first game back from injury, senior/junior defensive line Norman Heuer recorded two TFLs for a loss of six yards.
Iowa Notes
Iowa's previous largest margin of victory in Michigan Stadium came by a 37-14 margin in 1958. Iowa's biggest win over Michigan was 26 points in a 26-0 win in Iowa City in 1984.
Iowa is 5-0 in the Big Ten for the first time since 1990 and Iowa is 8-1 after nine games for the first time since 1991.
Iowa has won six of its last seven games outside of Iowa City, including wins at Northwestern, over Texas Tech in the Alamo Bowl, at Miami (Ohio), at Penn State, at Indiana and at Michigan. Iowa has won four straight road games in Big Ten play for the first time since winning all four Big Ten road games during the 1996 season.
Iowa has started the game on offense in 37 of its last 38 games, with the only exception being Iowa's game at Miami (Ohio) earlier this season. Iowa has started the game on offense in 38 of 44 games under Kirk Ferentz.
Today's attendance of 111,496 marks the largest crowd to ever watch an Iowa football game. The previous largest crowd to see Iowa play football, 108,247, occurred earlier this season in Iowa's 42-35 OT win at Penn State.
Iowa drove 80 yards for a touchdown on its first possession, marking the seventh time in nine games that Iowa opened the game with a touchdown drive. Iowa drove for a touchdown in its first five games before failing to score on its first drive against Purdue and Michigan State. Iowa has outscored its opponents 129-21 in the first quarter this season.
Michigan State, with a touchdown drive, is the only Iowa opponent to score on its first possession of the game against Iowa this season. Last week vs. Indiana marked the first time this season Iowa's opponent did not score in the first half.
With a 19-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 27-yarder in the fourth quarter, Nate Kaeding extended his consecutive field goal streak to 20, including 17 straight this season. His last miss came in the first half of the Alamo Bowl win over Texas Tech at the end of last season. He leads Iowa in scoring with 90 points this season after leading the team with 85 points in 2001. His 90 points rank sixth on Iowa's single-season scoring list and he ranks third in career scoring with 237 points.
With his 68 receiving yards today, TE Dallas Clark has surpassed 1,000 career receiving yards. Clark today had five catches, raising his season totals to 28 receptions for 470 yards and his career totals to 66 catches for 1,009 yards. Clark is the 27th Iowa player to total over 1,000 career receiving yards.
QB Brad Banks completed 12-of-20 passes for 222 yards, three touchdowns (39, 3 and 23 yards) and no interceptions. He also rushed seven times for 53 yards. He has now thrown for 18 touchdowns this season. He now ranks 11th in Iowa career passing with 2,379 yards.
WR C.J. Jones had two touchdown receptions in a game for the third time this season. He had scoring receptions of 39 and three yards today. He also had two scoring receptions against Penn State and Michigan State. Jones finished with 81 receiving yards on a career-high eight receptions. His previous high was seven receptions at Penn State (9/28/02).
LB Howard Hodges finished the game with six tackles (five solo and one assist). Three of his six tackles were for loss, including two sacks. He is tied with Colin Cole and Matt Roth for most sacks this year (6).
Iowa dominated time of possession. The Hawkeyes held the ball for 38:27, the most in a game this year. Michigan maintained possession for only 21:33. Iowa tallied 399 yards of total offense to Michigan's 171.
RB Jermelle Lewis scored two touchdowns in a game for the second time this season. He had rushing touchdowns of one and two yards in Iowa's season-opening win over Akron. Today his touchdowns came on a five-yard run and a 23-yard pass reception. Lewis finished the game with 109 yards rushing on 18 attempts. Lewis posted 105 of his rushing yards in the second half. It also marks the 11th time in Iowa's last 12 games that it has had a 100-yard rusher. It is the second game this year that Lewis rushed for over 100 yards, the other contest being Iowa's season-opening win vs. Akron (124 yards).
Iowa entered the game today ranked second in the nation in rushing defense, allowing 67.4 yards per game. Today Iowa held Michigan to 22 rushing yards and for the 12th time in 13 games did not allow an opponent to have a player with 100 rushing yards.
