Junior/sophomore Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS), redshirt freshman Jimmy Wisinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) and senior/junior Chris Kellogg (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) round of the rest of the Wolverines' five-man team.
Last Time on the Links: U-M Ties for 14th at Xavier
With Jimmy Wisinski's even-par 71 and Dave Nichols and freshman Blake Burman (Miami, Fla./Palmetto HS) each shooting 73, the Wolverines shot 292 in the final round of the Xavier Provident Invitational (Oct. 14-15) at the Kings Island Resort in Cincinnati, Ohio. Despite the final-round tally the Wolverines stayed in a tie for 14th with an 889 54-hole total, following team rounds of 294 and 303 on the first day. The Maize and Blue tied with Ball State (305-288-289/889). Wisinski led the Wolverine charge, shattering his career-best 54-hole total by eight strokes as he tied for 30th with a 220 tally after rounds of 73, 76 and 71. Nichols improved with each round and tied for 55th with a 224 total. He opened with a 77, but then shot a 74 in the second followed by a two-over 73, which included three birdies, in the final round. Rob Tighe tied for 62nd with a 225 total (72-78-75). Mark McIntosh and Burman tied for 70th with 227 totals. McIntosh fired rounds of 73, 75 and 79, while in his first appearance in U-M's lineup Burman had rounds of 76, 78 and a career-best 73.
Rotation Continues
For the fifth straight tournament the competition in the weekly qualifiers has been tough, as the Wolverines will use their fifth different lineup of the season at the Landfall Tradition. As a team, the Maize and Blue is averaging 297.0 per round as a team and 891.0 for a 54-hole tournament average.
Wisinski Hits Another Career Best
Redshirt freshman Jimmy Wisinski shattered his career-best 54-hole total with a 220 performance at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 14-15). His total was eight strokes better than the 228 he tallied at the Wolverine Invitational. In three tournaments this season, he has made it a continual trend of lowering his tallies. He opened with a 244 54-hole total at the Ridges (Sept. 14-15), then dropped 16 strokes with his 228 at the Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 5-6), followed with his career-best 220 at the Xavier Invitational. In addition, from the first round to the final round, Wisinski is dropping over three strokes, averaging 78.3 in the first compared to 75.0 in final rounds. He is averaging 76.88 strokes per round this season.
Make It Five Now
When freshman Blake Burman teed off at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 14-15), he was the fifth Wolverine this year to play in his first official tournament as a Wolverine. Technically, Burman played in his first collegiate tournament at the Wolverine Invitational competing as an individual, but this will mark the first time he was in coach Andrew Sapp's scoring lineup. Burman tied for 70th after rounds of 76, 78 and a career-best, two-over 73 for a career-best 227 total. Earlier this year, Mark McIntosh, Bruce Svechota-Kingsbury (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills School) and Jimmy Wisinski made their collegiate debuts at the The Ridges (Sept. 14-15), while Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS) made his the following week at the Northern Intercollegiate.
Looking to Strike Low Again
Senior/junior Chris Kellogg's second-round score of even-par 71 at the Wolverine Invitational set a new career best. It topped the back-to-back 73s he fired first in the first and second rounds of the 2001 Bruce Fossum Invitational (April 28-29, 2001). After not competing at the Xavier Invitational, Kellogg will be trying to top those numbers at the Landfall Tradition. He is averaging nearly three strokes better than his career best scoring average with a 75.66 per round average this year. His previous career-best was a 78.44 as a sophomore/freshman.
Steadily Improving
Junior/sophomore Rob Tighe continues to have a solid fall season as he rewrites his golf history. After only playing in two of 11 tournaments last year, Tighe has played in all four this season; and he leads the Wolverines with a 73.83 scoring average, almost one and a half strokes lower than his first season of 75.40. Tighe's second-round score of one-under 70 at the Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 5-6) set a new career best. It topped the 72 he fired in the final round of the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 28-29). In addition, his 217 54-hole total at the Wolverine was also a career best, topping the 223 he had at the Ridges (Sept. 28-29).
Going Low
Redshirt freshman Jimmy Wisinski's final-round score of two-under-par 69 at the Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 5-6) set a new career best by nine strokes and marked the first time in his career he has broken the 70-stroke barrier. His previous best was 78 in the second round of the Wolverine Invitational and in the second round of the Ridges (Sept. 14-15).
Nichols Hits the Mark
Junior Dave Nichols' first-round, two-under 69 at the Wolverine Invitational (Oct. 5-6) was a career-best single-round score. His previous best tally was 70 fired in the first round at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 28-29) and in the first round of the Kepler Intercollegiate (April 14-15, 2001). Nichols' 218 total tied his career-best 54-hole total with the 218 he tallied at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 8-9, 2001). Nichols is second on the Wolverine squad in stroke average with a career-best pace of 74.08.
