| | Heaton and Crumpton celebrate a Michigan goal. |
The Wolverines wasted little time in the match before taking a 1-0 lead with a goal in the sixth minute. Senior defender Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS) won the ball at midfield with a tough tackle while Miami was in transition. Kayal then pushed the ball ahead where Crumpton and Heaton took on only two remaining RedHawk defenders. Crumpton passed the ball left, where Heaton's run gave her an open lane to the goal. The shot from inside the 18-yard box was nearly blocked by Miami goalie Leigh Terry, but its momentum carried it into the right corner of the goal at 5:21.
Heaton struck again after some defensive play of her own. Stealing the ball 30 yards out from the last MU defender, Heaton advanced down the right side of the field. Terry moved out of the net to cut down the angle, but Heaton's shot found the inside of the left post to give Michigan a 2-0 lead at 33:32.
Michigan continued its strong play in the second half, after limiting Miami to only two shots in the first frame, and secured an odd insurance goal just over two minutes into the half. Six feet outside the penalty area, Crumpton chipped the ball over the defense and it bounced cleanly to senior midfielder Vicky Whitley (Spring, Texas/Klein HS). Whitley kicked the ball as it bounced and lofted a lazy shot toward the net and the ball floated just under the crossbar for the goal. The assist, her second of the game, gave Crumpton her 115th career point to surpass Kacy Beitel (1997-2000) as the program's all-time leading scorer.
Sophomore forward Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) added Michigan's fourth goal with just 45 seconds remaining in the contest. Morgan scored on a one-time shot off of a cross by midfielder Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) from the right corner.
Grech was strong in net for the Wolverines with four saves. Her most tense moment came in the second half when she was able to field the ball despite being run into by Miami's Katie Milligan on the play. Grech held onto the ball despite being knocked to the ground.
The Wolverines will host No. 3 national seed Pepperdine, a 2-1 second-round winner over Wisconsin, in the the third round on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the U-M Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for noon. Eight third-round games will be played at campus sites across the nation next weekend (Nov. 21-23).

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On finally getting past the second round in the NCAAs ... "It's a huge monkey off our backs. We have an experienced team that really wanted it and was really focused. I think we've played a lot better than in the past in our second-round games."
On the importance of Michigan's defense in the game ... "Your best offense is a great defense. We told ourselves before the game that if we can make the tackles and then find that one dangerous pass, then we're going to be in good shape."
On the team's ability to keep focused while playing with a lead ... "We told them that a 2-0 lead is scary because you tend to take a sigh of relief. We made sure to refocus and told ourselves that 2-0 isn't good enough for us; we needed to add an insurance goal. The team knew that the two-goal lead was not a time to sit back."
On the impact that Therese Heaton has made this season ... "Therese has come up big. Abby (Crumpton) and her have worked really well together. It's great to be able to have a senior out there with a freshman. Therese can hold the ball and she's strong. I expected a lot from her and she has actually exceeded my expectations. I expect some more great things from her."
Michigan Senior Forward Abby Crumpton
On her assist on Therese Heaton's first goal ... "Most of the Miami defenders were on my side, so it didn't make sense for me to keep the ball. Therese made a great run, got herself in position in front of the goal and I put it through and she put it away."
On becoming Michigan's career points leader ... "It's nice, I don't feel any different. It's nice to make a mark on the program and to leave something behind."
On finally getting over the hump in the second round ... "I don't think it's hit me yet, but it's a relief. In the past, we would win the first-round game, but we couldn't convert that same energy to the second round. When we beat Oakland in the first-round game, we cheered for a little while after the game but immediately focused on this game. That's how we will continue to think."
Michigan Freshman Forward Therese Heaton
On scoring the first two goals of an NCAA Tournament game ... "It feels great, I couldn't have asked for anything better. It's so much fun to be out there with everybody. It's not just an individual effort, our whole team made it happen out there today. Everyone wanted it so bad and I think that showed through the way that we played."
Miami Head Coach Bobby Kramig
Opening statement ... "I think the first thing to do is congratulate Michigan. They played really well today; I was very impressed with their team. They have a lot going for them and we wish them the best the rest of the tournament."
On giving Michigan the momentum early ... "We absolutely served up the first two goals on silver platters to them. We kind of shot ourselves in the foot with it. I thought the game itself was well played, I thought it was up and down the field. We had some moments where we caught a rhythm and got some things going and generated some chances. You can't give a team as good as Michigan is those kinds of opportunities because they'll just kill you with it."
On the main key to Michigan's victory ... "Physically, they're very strong. If I had to pull out on thing that was the difference, it would be their physical strength."
Miami Senior Midfielder Shaedyn Cousino On the game ... "It definitely wasn't our day. We gave up two early chances that kind of took us out of the game. Michigan is a great bunch of athletes and they're a great team."
Miami Senior Midfielder Danielle Altiero
On Michigan's ability to gain the momentum ... "I think we were equal to them both athletically and skillfully. The balls just weren't falling our way today. They did a great job of hopping on their chances. They got the two goals early and had the momentum."
