Smith Earns Big Ten Wrestler of the Week Recognition

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan fifth-year senior Kyle Smith (Butte, Mont./Butte HS) was named Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Week for his performance in the Wolverines' dual meet at Lehigh (Nov. 22). This is the first career weekly honor for Smith and the first time since the 1998-99 season that a Wolverine wrestler has garnered such an award.

In just his first match of the season, Smith capped Michigan's 26-12 win over the eighth-ranked Lehigh Mountain Hawks with an upset victory over No. 1-ranked Jon Trenge in the 197-pound match. The score remained close throughout the bout, but Smith, ranked fifth in last week's Intermat poll, scored a takedown late in the third period to give himself the final advantage and earn the 6-4 decision.

Michigan will return to the mat next weekend (Dec. 6-7) when they head to Las Vegas, Nev., for the annual Cliff Keen Invitational, of which the Wolverines are the defending champions.
