EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team was eliminated from the Big Ten Conference Tournament today (Thursday, Nov. 7) after losing a penalty-kick shootout, 3-2, to Ohio State at Old College Field. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie after 90 minutes of regulation play and two 10-minute overtime periods, however, the Buckeyes converted the odd kick to advance to Friday's semifinal game.

With the shootout score tied 2-2, Buckeye goalkeeper Emily Haynam made a great save in the fifth round on Laura Tanchon (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Dana Hills HS), allowing her squad to advance with a goal. Jen Miller took advantage of the opportunity, sending her shot just past the reach of Michigan goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School). Grech made a save on OSU's third shot, and Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) scored the Wolverines' second goal in the fourth round.
Ohio State took a 1-0 lead after a 32nd-minute tally from Heather Miller. Gaining a turnover at midfield, the Buckeyes served the ball to the top of the 18-yard box, where it took a bounce over an attempted Michigan clearance. The ball ended up on Miller's foot and was sent to the right corner of the net from 15 yards out.
Michigan fought back to equalize the score before halftime, as senior forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) tallied her 11th goal of the season at 43:19. Taking control of the ball at midfield after a short clearance, Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS) slotted the ball through to Crumpton, who went one-on-one at Haynam before putting her shot into the right corner.
Crumpton advanced on two opportunities late in the second half, but Haynam came up big on both. With 5:21 remaining, a hard OSU tackle with Heaton on the ball forced the ball to skip away from the defense and into Crumpton's run. Realizing the danger, Haynam jumped off her line and forced a quick shot that hit her thigh and bounced away.
With only 50 seconds on the clock, Heaton set Crumpton up with another breakaway, but Haynam effectively cut down the angle for the stop.
Ohio State built a 3-0 overtime advantage in shots, but neither team could find a way to break the deadlock before penalty kicks were required.
The Wolverines await the Monday (Nov. 11) announcement of the 64-team NCAA Tournament field. First-round games begin next Friday (Nov. 15) at 16 campus sites.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On trying to create opportunities ... "We're just disappointed it came down to penalty kicks and, obviously, we didn't shine in those, so it's just disappointing."
On Ohio State ... "They were just playing stronger. They won tackles, they won air balls, they were possessing the ball and they were running us around. We were ready to play but we just didn't get somebody to step up. In games like these, everyone needs to be stepping it up to win balls and be aggressive, but we didn't have that happen in the first half."
On her halftime changes ... "It was all a mental and effort change. I told them that you win games by action, not about talking about winning or planning what you're going to do."
On preparing for the NCAA Tournament ... "We really need to get people healthy and feeling good. It's late in the season and, obviously, we've got bangs and bruises and sprains we need to get healthy. To prepare for that, you just need time to rest and hopefully, we get a bid; it's not assured right now by any means."
Senior Forward Abby Crumpton
On her goal ... "Andrea (Kayal) pushed up and made an aggressive play. She got the ball to me and I just had to put it in."
On putting things together for the NCAA Tournament ... "We just need to get 90 minutes of intensity. We're only playing like a one-half team right now. We need to pick up the intensity for the full game. We need to change that."
