BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sophomore Jennifer Gandolph (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) led the University of Michigan volleyball team with 21 kills and three other Wolverines added double-digit kills, but it was not enough to overcome the Indiana Hoosiers tonight (Saturday, Nov. 9) at the University Gymnasium. The five-game loss (30-19, 29-31, 26-30, 30-21, 15-13) dropped the Wolverines into a tie with Indiana for fourth place in the Big Ten Conference standings.
Sophomore Carrie Ritchie (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive HS) played in the front row for the first time this season and recorded 12 kills. She completed her first double-double of the season by adding 14 digs, one shy of her season high. She also contributed three service aces to the Wolverines' effort.
Junior captain Erin Moore (Tiffin, Ohio/Columbian HS) earned her ninth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 10 digs against the Hoosiers and recorded five blocks. Katrina Lehman (Bloomfield, Hills, Mich./Marian HS) and Nicole Poquette (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) also posted solid numbers. Lehman added 11 kills and seven blocks, while Poquette chipped in eight kills, eight digs and four blocks.
The Wolverines (14-10, 8-6 Big Ten) dropped the first game of the match 30-19, as the Hoosiers were nearly unstoppable and posted a match-high .553 (22-1-38) hitting percentage. Indiana (18-8, 8-6 Big Ten) came back down to earth in the second game, and Michigan took a 31-29 victory to even the match at one game each.
Michigan grabbed a two-games-to-one lead with a 30-26 victory in game three, but the Hoosiers clawed their way back to tie the match with a 30-21 victory in the fourth game. The deciding game five was close, but Indiana won 15-13 for a 3-2 victory in the match.
Michigan returns home to face No. 7-ranked Minnesota at 7 p.m. Friday (Nov. 15) at Cliff Keen Arena. Fans who bring a non-perishable food item will receive half-price admission to the match. Fans are also encouraged to pack Cliff Keen Arena the following night (Saturday, Nov. 16), as the match with Iowa will be shown tape-delayed at 4 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 17) on Fox Sports Chicago.
