ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team completed Maize and Blue Intrasquad today (Thursday, Dec. 12) with the Blue team earning the 381-287 victory at the U-M Indoor Track Building. With a 116-87 lead after the first day of competition, the Blue side posted wins in three events, including the coed 8x400-meter relay and a meet record-setting 800-meter performance from freshman Andrew Ellerton (Windsor, Ontario/Confederation), to seal the win. Maize did sweep the evening's field events, but the wins were not enough to make a comeback.
The event was capped off by the coed relay, in which the Blue "A" unit posted the winning time of 7:17.42. Maize placed its top squad second in the spirited event, with a time of 7:23.51.
Ellerton gave Blue a win in the 800-meter run with his time of 1:54.71, besting the meet record of 1:55.57 set by Dan Snyder (1996-2000) in 1999. Senior Philip Stead (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS) was second and also beat the previous record at 1:54.97.
Sophomore Nathan Taylor (Courtenay, B.C./Georges P. Vanier) earned his first victory of intersquad with a time of 7.00 seconds in the 60-meter dash. Fifth-year senior Kevin Lamb's (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett HS) time of 7.07 was a close second in the event.
In the 400-meter dash, sophomore Seth Waits (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Otsego HS) gave Blue another win with a sub-50-second performance. Waits had nearly a two-second lead on the field with his time of 49.95 and was only 0.14 off the Lamb's 2001 meet-record pace.
Senior transfer Alex L'Hereux (Weedon, Quebec/Palm Beach Gardens HS, Fla.) gave Maize a win in the 2,400-meter run (6:39.74). Freshmen Spencer Dowdall (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs HS) and Brad Miller (Lake Orion, Mich/Lake Orion HS) earned wins for the Maize squad in the field, in the pole vault and triple jump, respectively. Dowdall cleared 14-0 in the pole vault, while Miller's jump of 42-4.75 out-leapt the field by over a foot. Freshman Brad Hoffman (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was the shot put champion with his throw of 47-2 1/2.
The Wolverines begin their regular season by hosting the Jack Harvey Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
