12/29/2002 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Michigan reached the GLI championship game for the first time since 1999.
The Wolverines had faced a team from outside the state of Michigan in the GLI final on only two previous occasions -- North Dakota (1988) and Maine (1990) -- and won both contests. With the loss against BU, Michigan falls to 2-1 in GLI finals against non-Michigan schools.
Michigan's all-time record against Boston University is now 10-8-0, including a 1-1-2 line at the GLI. The Wolverines have now lost back-to-back games against BU, with the last meeting coming at the 1997 Frozen Four.
Michigan, which is 5-2 in its last seven games at Joe Louis Arena, had its three-game winning at JLA ended.
U-M's non-conference record will conclude at 6-2. Tonight's game versus BU was the final regular-season game for U-M against a non-CCHA opponent.
U-M has allowed the first goal of the game in three of the last four contests. Michigan is 3-2-1 when its opponent scores first.
The Wolverines have trailed at some point in each of the last four games.
Michigan has scored a first-period goal in nine of the last 10 games and is outscoring opponents by a 20-11 margin in the first 20 minutes of play this season.
Michigan's record is now 1-2-1 in games that were tied after two periods of play.
U-M has scored in the second period in all but one game this season and is outscoring opponents 29-9 in the frame.
Michigan has allowed two or more goals in the third period in three of the past four games. U-M has been outscored 7-4 in the third period of those games.
Giving up three third-period goals and five goals total tied season highs for U-M.
Michigan's top two goal-scorers are freshmen Jeff Tambellini (10) and Brandon Kaleniecki (7).
Jed Ortmeyer was the lone Wolverine named to the GLI all-tournament team.
Nick Martens has two assists in his last three games. Overall, he has a 1-5-6 line in 18 games.
Brandon Kaleniecki became Michigan's second leading goal-scorer (7) as he scored his third goal in the last four games.
Kaleniecki has four points in the past four games (3-1-4). With one goal and one assist he achieved his fourth career multi-point effort.
Mark Mink's eighth helper of the season leaves him one shy of his assist total for last year. Also, his point total thus far (5-8-13) is just one short of his entire output in 2001-02 (5-9-14).
David Moss scored his fifth goal of the season, a career high.
Jeff Tambellini scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season. He has notched four markers in the past six games, including one in back-to-back games.
John Shouneyia has four assists in his last two games and 11 points (4-7-11) in the past 12 contests.
Jason Ryznar scored his first goal of the season as he played in just his ninth game due to injuries. His last goal came against St. Cloud State on March 23, 2002, in the NCAA Regional.
Milan Gajic has recorded an assist in two straight games.
