Until tonight, Michigan had not given up the game's first two goals this season. The last time U-M spotted its opponent a two-goal lead was on April 4, 2002, in the NCAA Frozen Four semifinal against Minnesota.
U-M's three-goal deficit to Northern Michigan marked its largest deficit of the season.
Michigan trailed entering the third period of play for the first time this season with its 3-1 deficit after 40 minutes of play.
The Wolverines have scored a goal in the second period of every game this season and are outscoring opponents 26-7 during that time.
Michigan played its third straight game on Olympic-sized ice and is 2-1-0 on the big sheet this season.
U-M suffered its worst defeat of the season with the three-goal deficit tonight. Prior to the contest, U-M had suffered its two losses by a one-goal margin.
U-M's penalty-killing streak was snapped at 44 power plays when NMU netted a power-play goal at 13:37 of the second period during its second power play of the night. U-M also allowed its first power-play goal since Nov. 8 at Bowling Green, a span of eight games.
Michigan suffered its first road defeat in 16 games, dropping a game in an opponent's building for the first time since Oct. 19, 2001. U-M is 3-1-1 in an opponent's rink this season.
The Wolverines are 2-1-0 against teams they will play four times in league play this year.
With the loss, Michigan has dropped a series-high four straight games to the Wildcats and suffered its first-ever defeat at NMU's Berry Events Center. Entering the game, U-M was 1-0-3 against NMU at the BEC.
Dwight Helminen extended his point streak to five games with an assist and has 2-4-6 during that time. Helminen also notched his ninth assist of the year to take the team lead in that category and surpass his assist total from 40 games last season (8).
Jeff Tambellini netted his second goal in three games and has a point in nine of 15 appearances this season. Tambellini paces U-M with eight markers.
Senior forward Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.) tallied two assists and has four helpers in his last three games, tallying a pair of multi-assist efforts.
Brandon Kaleniecki netted his first goal in nine games and notched a point for the first time in his last seven appearances.
Sophomore forward David Moss (Livonia, Mich.) notched an assist and needs one more helper to match his total from last season (9). Moss has 4-8-12 this year, one point shy of the 4-9-13 he recorded as a freshman.
