Wolverines Roll to Victory Over 13th-Ranked Illinois

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Before a crowd of 823 fans, the third-ranked University of Michigan wrestling squad cruised to a 25-6 win over the 13th-ranked Illinois on Friday (Feb. 1) at Crisler Arena. The Wolverines won eight of the 10 individual matches in the team victory.

At 184 pounds, second-ranked Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edward HS) added to Michigan's lead after wrestling a close match with 20th-ranked Jason Potter. The senior captain scored a late second-period reversal to give him the 7-4 advantage heading into the final period. After a quick escape by Potter, he was given his second warning for stalling, giving Hrovat an additional point and making the final score 8-5.
Fifth-ranked Kyle Smith (Butte, Mont./Butte HS) continued the Wolverines' momentum with a win over Illinois' Tyrone Byrd in the 197-pound match. Smith started the match well, scoring three first-period takedowns and then holding on to earn the 7-3 decision.
The heavyweight bout proved to be the closest contest of the evening, with fourth-ranked John Lockhart of Illinois taking a 3-2 decision over 10th-ranked Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruiport HS). Lockhart, the defending national champion, managed to earn a first-period takedown which proved to be the deciding factor in the match.
At 125 pounds, eighth-ranked A.J. Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) dominated his match against the Fighting Illini's 19th-ranked Twan Pham. Grant scored two takedowns in the bout and collected 2:45 in riding time to win 6-1 and give the Wolverines a 13-3 edge heading into the intermission break.
At 133 pounds, seventh-ranked Foley Dowd (Howell, N.J./The Peddie School) wrestled a close match against Chad Hay. With the score tied 3-3 entering the final period, Dowd scored an early takedown in the final period and collected 1:16 in riding time to win the bout by a 6-5 margin.
Clark Forward (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold HS) had a strong third period against Eric Novak in the 141-pound match to extend the Wolverine lead to 16 points. With Novak starting the period in the down position, Forward held the advantage past the halfway mark of the period. With the extra point added for riding time, Forward was the 4-2 decision winner.
After a scoreless first period, seventh-ranked Mike Kulczycki (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward HS) came on strong late against 19th-ranked Ryan Berger in the 149-pound match, scoring a pair of takedowns in the final two periods en route to a 5-3 decision.
At 157 pounds, fifth-ranked Ryan Bertin (Broadview Heights, Ohio/St. Edward HS) squared off against 18th-ranked Griff Powell in a match that came down to the final period. Tied after two periods, Bertin was awarded a point after Powell received his second warning for stalling. With the one-point advantage, Bertin recorded a takedown, which gave him the 4-1 decision.
In the final contest of the dual meet, at 165 pounds, second-ranked Matt Lackey of Illinois scored four takedowns against ninth-ranked Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./North HS) and won the match by a 10-3 decision.
Next weekend the Wolverines will take to the road for a pair of dual meets against Big Ten rivals Penn State and Ohio State. On Friday (Feb. 8), Michigan will head to State College, Pa., to take on the Nittany Lions at Rec Hall Arena at 7 p.m. On Sunday (Feb. 10), the Wolverines will be in Columbus, Ohio, to square off against the Buckeyes at St. John Arena at 2 p.m.
