Michigan Wins Six Events in Final Indoor Home Meet

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team hosted its final meet of the indoor season on Saturday (Feb. 16) afternoon and marked the occasion by winning six events at the Harold Silverston Invitational. Highlighting the day for the Wolverines were two victories by senior Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) and 1-2-3 sweeps by the Maize and Blue in three events.
Okenwa led one of the sweeps by winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.56. Following in second were freshman Darren Adams (Mentor, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) with a mark of 21.93 and junior Kevin Lamb (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett HS) completed the sweep by posting a time of 21.97. Before the 200-meter dash, Okenwa posted his first victory of the afternoon by claiming the top time in the 60-meter dash (6.85). Freshman Nathan Taylor (Courtenay, British Columbia/GP Vanier HS) added a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a finish of 6.94.
Michigan's other 1-2-3 finishes came in the 600-meter dash and in the mile. The 600-meter dash saw sophomore Dan Cooke (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) edge out teammate DarNell Talbert (Bedford, Texas/Mt. Carmel HS) for first place, 1:21.08 to 1:21.62. Senior Kevin Rogan (Grass Lake, Mich./Grass Lake HS) followed in third with a mark of 1:22.31.
In the mile, junior Ryan Hesselink (Freeport, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS) posted his second win of the year, as he was also victorious in the 3,000-meter run at the George Mason Patriot Games (Feb. 2). With a posting of 4:14.68 in the mile on Saturday, Hesselink captured the top spot, with sophomore Terrence Rindler (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) and sophomore Dave Sage (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) placing second and third, respectively, with times of 4:16.97 and 4:19.68.
Michigan's other wins came in the 800-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay. In the 800-meter run the Wolverines just missed another sweep as sophomores Tom Greenless (Milford, Mich./Milford HS) and Brian Turner (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS) posted the top two times. Greenless won the event with a mark of 1:54.16 and Turner followed at 1:55.39.
The Maize and Blue then closed out the day with a win in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of junior Derek Applewhite (Brighton, Colo./Brighton HS), freshmen Adams and Seth Waits (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Otsego HS) and sophomore Andrew Ochs (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline HS) combined for the fastest time (3:16.73).
The 4x400-meter relay capped off a good day for Applewhite and Adams. Along with Adams' runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash, Applewhite posted a runner-up mark in the 60-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 8.00.
Michigan's next meet will be at the Big Ten Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24, in Minneapolis, Minn. Events will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. CST and on Sunday at 9 a.m.
