Wolverines Fall to No. 5 Hawkeyes in Big Ten Matchup

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 6 University of Michigan men's gymnastics team was defeated by the No. 5 Iowa Hawkeyes 212.000-208.250 on Friday (Feb. 22) at the IU Field House. The Wolverines could not overcome the two-point deficit they faced after the first event.

Toman

Leading the Wolverines were senior Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) and junior Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS). Toman received top honors on both the still rings (9.150) and the horizontal bar (9.050), earning his second consecutive horizontal bar title. He also captured second on the parallel bars with a score of 8.950.

Zimmerman finished in third place in the all-around with a 51.400 total. Contributing to his all-around was a first-place finish on the parallel bars (9.050) and a third-place finish on the vault (9.200). He also finished in a tie for fifth place on the floor exercise with an 8.750.

Also faring well for the Wolverines were seniors Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) and Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS), who finished in second place on the pommel horse and vault, respectively. To go along with his 9.250 on the pommel horse Diaz-Luong scored a 9.050 on the still rings to finish in fourth place. Kenna had a 9.250 on the vault and captured third place on the floor exercise with an 8.850.

The Wolverines will continue their season next weekend when they travel to Berkeley, Calif., to take on the No. 7-ranked California Golden Bears on Sunday, March 3, at 1:30 p.m. PST.
