Bies, a junior center, leads the Wolverines in scoring (16.2) and rebounding (8.3), while her team-leading nine double-doubles are the third-best total in the Big Ten. Ingram, a senior guard, recently broke the Michigan record for three-point field goals in a single season and is Michigan's second-leading scorer (15.5). Ingram also paces the Maize and Blue in assists (4.2) after playing extensively this season at the both guard positions.
Bies and Ingram are the first All-Big Ten first- or second-team selections from Michigan since Stacey Thomas (1997-00) earned first-team distinction by both the coaches and media and Anne Thorius (1998-2001) was tabbed as a second-team selection by the coaches in 2000.
Bies' best offensive output of the season came when the Michigan native tallied a career-best 36 points at Illinois on Jan. 27. The 36-point total matched the third-best single-game point total in Michigan history. Bies, whose nine double-doubles this season push her career total to 20, has also scored 20 or more points on seven occasions, which is the second-best total on the team behind Ingram's eight. Additionally, Bies enters this week's Big Ten Tournament ranked among the top 10 in the conference in six different categories. Bies is eighth in scoring (16.2), 10th in field goal percentage (.523), fifth in rebounding (8.3), seventh in blocked shots (1.33), fourth in offensive rebounding (3.19) and fourth in defensive rebounding (5.15).
Ingram, who also owns the Michigan career mark for triples (180) after breaking the record in the sixth game this season against Notre Dame (Dec. 2), has led Michigan in scoring in each of its last four games and in a team-best 10 tilts this season. While shouldering much of Michigan's offensive load on the perimeter, Ingram owns Michigan's two best single-game assist totals this season with career bests of 10 vs. Illinois (Dec. 28) and at Minnesota (Jan. 17). Also a Michigan native, Ingram is the only player in the Big Ten ranked among the top 12 in scoring, three-point shooting, assists and assist-turnover ratio. Ingram is 12th in scoring (15.5), eighth in assists (4.19), third in three-point field goal percentage (.403) and eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.30).
The All-Big Ten honorable mention distinction is the first for Smith, who finished the regular season third on the team in scoring (12.8) and second in rebounding (7.6). Smith's best performance of the season came in Michigan's 82-74 win over Iowa on Jan. 31 when she matched a career best with 26 points and grabbed a career-best 19 rebounds. Her 19 boards matched the fourth-best single-game total in school history.
Bies and Ingram are the fourth and fifth Michigan players named to either the All-Big Ten first or second team under head coach Sue Guevara, who is in her sixth season leading the Maize and Blue. The previous selections were Stacey Thomas (first team - 2000, second team - 1998, '99), Pollyanna Johns (first team - 1998, second team - 1997) and Anne Thorius (second team - 2000, '01).
Bies and Ingram lead Michigan into first-round action of the 2002 Big Ten Tournament against Illinois on Thursday (Feb. 28, 3 p.m.) at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The game will be televised live on FOX Sports Chicago.
