Wolverines Topple Quakers for Fifth Consecutive Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team gained its fifth straight victory Sunday (Feb. 3) at the Varsity Tennis Center, defeating the University of Pennsylvania 7-0. U-M (5-0) dominated from the beginning, taking all nine matches to give head coach Mark Mees the victory in his 50th career match.
The Wolverines got off to a quick start, sweeping all three doubles matches to gain their first point of the afternoon. Sophomore Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) were the first to close out their match at the No. 3 spot, defeating Pennsylvania's Anthony Pu and Craig Rubin 8-4. Senior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) and junior Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) won a close match at No. 1, topping Ryan Harwood and Fanda Stejskal 8-6 to clinch the doubles point for Michigan. Senior Henry Beam (Kalmazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./N.D. Independent Study) held off David Lynn and Brian Barki 8-6 to remain undefeated on the season and give U-M the clean sweep of the doubles matches.
The Maize and Blue carried the momentum into singles play, giving up only two sets on their way to closing out all six matches. Cox scored a commanding 6-1, 6-4 win over Lynn at the No. 2 spot while Novak took care of Rubin 6-4, 6-1. Michigan continued to receive strong efforts from its freshman, with Lockin and David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskolu) taking their matches at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots, respectively. Beam finished the day's matches by adding a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Stejskal at No. 1 to give Michigan the 7-0 victory.
Michigan takes a week off before traveling to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for two matches. The Wolverines will meet Clemson Saturday (Feb. 16) in a neutral-site match beginning at 3 p.m. CST. Alabama will then host U-M Sunday (Feb. 17) in an 11 a.m. CST match.
