Michigan Dominates Minnesota for First Big Ten Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis squad collected its first Big Ten Conference dual match victory of the season, dominating Minnesota by a 6-1 score Sunday (March 17) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (5-6, 1-3 Big Ten) swept all three doubles matches to earn the team point and claimed singles victories at five of the six spots.
Sophomores Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) started things in doubles for the Wolverines with an 8-1 victory against Kandis Batiste and Cici Anderson at No. 3. The No. 2 doubles team of junior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) and sophomore Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) secured the team point with the 8-1 win over Kelly Perry and Andrea Rose. U-M completed the sweep as freshmen Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) won the final seven games of the match to prevail 8-6 at No. 1, rallying from a 6-1 deficit to Valerie Vladea and Michaela Havelkova.
The Wolverines put the match away quickly, winning straight-set matches at the No. 2 through No. 6 singles slots. Minnesota gained its only point as Vladea won a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Tipirneni at No. 1. Gaining singles wins for Michigan were DaCosta, Nolan, Rutherford, Duprez and junior Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS).
Michigan travels to Milwaukee, Wis., next week for a pair of matches. The Wolverines will face Marquette Saturday (March 23, noon CST) and Tulane Sunday (11 a.m. CST) at the Helfaer Tennis Center.
