Michigan Dominates South Florida in First Outdoor Match

TAMPA, Fla. -- Playing outdoors for the first time this season, the University of Michigan women's tennis team registered a 7-0 shutout against South Florida Saturday afternoon (March 2) at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The Wolverines (4-5) won two of the three doubles matches to earn the team point and claimed all six singles matches in straight sets to end a four-match losing streak.
Michigan started by winning the doubles point, claiming victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Junior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) and sophomore Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) posted an 8-6 win against Jennifer Sinclair and Claudia Nieto at No. 2. Sophomores Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) secured the team point with an 8-5 victory over Ashlee Callahan and Jackie Spicijaric at No. 3. The Bulls gained their only win of the match as Patricia Kilendo and Natalie Schwartz beat freshmen Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) by a 9-7 score at the top doubles spot.
In singles, the Wolverines won all six singles matches for the second time this season. Tipirneni won a 6-3, 7-5 match against Schwartz at No. 1 to claim her fifth singles victory of the season, while Duprez claimed her 10th win of the year with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kilendo at No. 5. DaCosta, Nolan and Rutherford earned straight-set wins at No. 2 through No. 4, respectively, while Plaushines gained a 6-3, 6-2 win against Spicijaric at No. 6.
The Wolverines take a week off before resuming Big Ten action against Wisconsin (Saturday, March 16) and Minnesota (Sunday, March 17) at the Varsity Tennis Center, beginning at 11 a.m. each day.
