Vanderkaay Shares Rookie Award at Spring Nationals

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- University of Michigan sophomore Christian Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS), a member of the Wolverine men's swimming and diving team, was voted co-Rookie of the Meet at the Phillips 66 U.S. Spring Nationals, held March 19-23 at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
Vanderkaay finished fourth in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:03.96, placed seventh in the 200-meter individual medley (2:09.30) and took ninth in the 100-meter butterfly (55.65). He shared the rookie award with Larsen Jensen of Bakersfield Swim Club.

Freshman Michael Galindo (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga College) also represented the Wolverines, placing 20th in the 200-meter backstroke (2:08.44) and 28th in the 100-meter backstroke (59.87), while U-M alumni and Olympic medalists Tom Malchow (1996-99) and Chris Thompson (1998-2001) won their specialties. Malchow had the top time in the 200-meter butterfly at 1:55.13, while Thompson was the top performer in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a mark of 15:24.97.
Ten Wolverine swimmers and one diver will close out the season at the NCAA Championships March 28-30 in Athens, Ga.
