Nystrom, who skated in all but two league games this season, posted 13 goals and eight assists for 21 points to rank third among the league's freshmen. Nystrom's 13 markers in CCHA play tied him with fellow All-Rookie Team members Dwyer and Voros and ranked him ninth among players in the league, while his four game-winning goals during the league campaign led all rookies and tied him for second in the CCHA. Overall, Nystrom has tallied 15-9-24 in 32 games to lead all U-M freshmen and rank fifth on the team in scoring.
Werner finished the CCHA regular season with 3-12-15 totals and a +10 rating in 28 games to rank second among rookie defensemen in both categories. One of five Wolverines to skate in all 36 games this season, Werner has posted 3-18-21 to lead all U-M freshmen and defensemen in assists while ranking second on the team. In addition, his +16 rating ties him for fourth on the team.
Members of the Bauer/CCHA All-Rookie Team were selected by the 12 head coaches in the CCHA, and coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own team. The team, which was selected based on statistics in conference games, will be honored at the 2002 CCHA Awards Banquet on Thursday, March 14, at the Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit.
Michigan (22-9-5, 19-5-4 CCHA), the regular-season champions of the CCHA and the hottest team in college hockey over the last 10 games with a 9-1-0 record, will open play in the CCHA Tournament this weekend, hosting Lake Superior State in a first-round, best-of-three series Friday through Sunday (March 8-10) at Yost Ice Arena. Friday's game is scheduled for a 7:35 p.m. start, while Saturday's contest, which will be televised live by FOX Sports Net Detroit, will begin at 7:05 p.m. Sunday's game, if necessary, will begin at 7:35 p.m.
