Wolverines Have Winning Streak Snapped by Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team was unable to extend its three-match winning streak Sunday afternoon (April 14), losing 5-2 against Iowa at the Klotz Tennis Courts. The Wolverines (10-9, 3-5 Big Ten) lost the doubles point for just the fifth time this season and could manage only two singles victories.
Iowa won the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 but Michigan sophomores Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) claiming an 8-4 win at No. 3 to keep the Hawkeyes from a doubles sweep. Nolan and Tipirneni improved to 13-3 in dual match action and are a team-best 7-1 in Big Ten matches.
Iowa put the match away in singles competition with wins at the top four spots. The Wolverines' only points of the match came as junior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) won in three sets against Pascale Veraverbeke at No. 5 (0-6, 7-5, 6-1) and fellow junior Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Gloria Okino at No. 6.
Michigan concludes the regular season with a pair of matches at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines host Purdue Saturday (April 20, 11 a.m.) and Indiana Sunday (April 21, 11 a.m.) before embarking on the Big Ten Championship (April 25-28) at Indiana University.
