Michigan Faces Irish, Hosts Eagles and Buckeyes
The University of Michigan baseball team (13-25, 8-12 Big Ten) faces a Top 25 team and two conference leaders in a tough, six-game week that closes with a four-game Big Ten weekend series with archrival and league-leading Ohio State (May 3-5) at Ray Fisher Stadium.
The Wolverines face nationally-ranked Notre Dame in the annual "Baseball Bash" Tuesday night (7:30 p.m.) in Grand Rapids, Mich. The game will be played in the newly renamed Fifth Third Ballpark, which is actually located in Comstock Park, Mich. Notre Dame (30-12, 11-6 Big East) is ranked No. 19 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 22 by Baseball America. The Irish are in second place in the Big East.
The Wolverines host cross-county rival Eastern Michigan (22-20, 14-6 MAC), the leader of the Mid-American Conference West Division, on Wednesday (May 1, 3 p.m.) after EMU plays at Detroit Mercy on Tuesday (April 30).
Michigan enters the week after dropping three of four games at Penn State despite outscoring the Nittany Lions 18-14 on the weekend. The series at Penn State closed out the month of April which found the Wolverines playing 14 of 16 Big Ten games on the road. Michigan was 5-9 on the road and 0-2 at home in the Big Ten in April, dropping into ninth place in league standings.
Michigan hosts Ohio State (25-13-1, 13-6 Big Ten) in single nine-inning Big Ten games on Friday (May 3, 3 p.m.) and Sunday (May 5, 1 p.m.) with the doubleheader (two seven-inning games) slated for Saturday (May 4, 1 p.m.). The Buckeyes, who enter the week after splitting four games at home vs. Purdue (April 26-28), are scheduled to host Youngstown State on Wednesday (May 1) before heading to Ann Arbor for the weekend.
Coaching Matchups
Michigan's interim head coach Chris Harrison, who served as assistant coach the past six years, enters the week with an overall record of 13-25 (8-12 Big Ten) after losing three of four games at Penn State (April 26-28). A head coach in the NAIA ranks at The Master's College (San Clarita, Calif.) for four seasons, Harrison collected his first win as a Wolverine at UC-Irvine (2-26-02) and his first Big Ten win vs. Iowa (March 30). Michigan is 6-4 in Ray Fisher Stadium under Harrison.
Paul Mainieri, in his eighth season as head coach at Notre Dame, enters the Michigan game with a coaching mark of 334-136-1 with the Fighting Irish. His record in 14 seasons as a coach at Division I is 486-294-1 including season seasons at Air Force. He coached six years at St. Thomas University (Fla.) with a 180-121 Division II mark.
Roger Coryell, in his 15th season as head coach at Eastern Michigan, enters the week with a coaching mark of 390-412-2 with the Eagles, including the 22-20 start this season. Coryell, a three-year letterwinner as a pitcher at EMU and an assistant coach for 16 seasons under legendary Ron Oestrike, is in his 34th season in the program. He was the starting pitcher in EMU's 1970 NAIA national championship win over Northeast Louisiana and he was an assistant when EMU made back-to-back College World Series appearances in 1975 and 1976.
Bob Todd, in his 15th season as head coach at Ohio State, enters the week with a coaching mark of 594-301-2 with the Buckeyes. His overall record in 19 seasons as a head coach is 718-373-2. A four-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, Todd has averaged over 40 wins a season with the Buckeyes after starting his head coaching career at Kent State (1984-87).
Opponent Matchups
Michigan holds the edge in the all-time series against all three opponents this week, with a 74-40 edge over Notre Dame, 95-47-2 vs. Eastern Michigan and 128-78 over Ohio State. ND took last season's meeting in the "Baseball Bash" in Grand Rapids, Mich., by a 9-1 count with RHP Peter Ogilvie pitching the complete-game victory. The Wolverines took both meetings vs. EMU last season, 4-0 in Ypsilanti and 5-3 in the rematch in Ann Arbor.
Ohio State and Michigan played five straight games in May a year ago with OSU winning four of the five, including the opener of the Big Ten Tournament. Michigan's win was 7-5 with Bobby Korecky (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) pitching the win that put the Wolverines in the playoffs. After losing to OSU in the first round of the Big Ten playoffs the Wolverines rebounded before losing in the championship game to Minnesota.
Baseball Bash
Michigan meets Notre Dame in Grand Rapids for the sixth straight season and for the seventh time in the last eight years in the newly renamed Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Mich. The Fighting Irish hold a 4-2 edge in the series that is hosted by Grand Rapids alumni clubs of both schools. The Michigan wins have been in 1995 (7-6) and in 1997 (4-3). ND has won four straight -- 1998 (9-1), 1999 (14-4), 2000 (5-4 in 11 innings) and 2001 (9-1).
The first "Bash" came in 1995 and produced one of the most exciting games in the series when U-M co-captain Ryan Van Oeveren from nearby Grandville, Mich., slugged the first homer over the pavilion in then-named Old Kent Park. "V.O." went 3-for-7 and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 16th inning in a game that took more than four hours (4:21) to complete. Junior CF Brian Simmons hit a two-out solo homer in the 14th inning to keep the game alive. The homer was one of three hit by Simmons in pro parks in 1995, with his others coming in the Metrodome and in Tiger Stadium.

Tentative Wolverine Pitching Rotation
The tentative starting pitchers for the Wolverines this week are TBA vs. Notre Dame and Eastern Michigan with Ohio State slated to face senior Bobby Korecky, junior Rich Hill (Milton, Mass./Milton HS), sophomore Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) and senior Jeff Trzos (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS). Tentative starters:
- vs. Notre Dame (Tuesday) -- Staff game.
- vs. Eastern Michigan (Wednesday) -- Junior RHP Tim Leveque (Northridge, Calif./Crespi HS) or sophomore RHP Bobby Garza (Southgate, Mich./Anderson HS). Leveque (1-2, 9.00 ERA) collected Michigan's first win of the season at UC-Irvine, allowing six hits and one run in six innings vs. the Anteaters. He suffered Big Ten defeats at Minnesota and Illinois. He has made three of his 12 career starts in 2002. Garza (0-1, 18.00) has made two career starts, including three-inning stint in loss at UC-Riverside on spring trip. He fanned two in a scoreless inning out of bullpen vs. Detroit and in his last outing he allowed one run in two innings vs. Oakland.
- vs. Ohio State #1 (Friday) -- Bobby Korecky (RHP, 3-5, 4.46 ERA, one save) is slated to make his ninth start of the season and the 33rd start of his U-M career. Last weekend he beat Penn State in a 15-4 complete game effort. Despite not recording a strikeout, he did get the benefit of a Big Ten record-tying six double plays. The win snapped a streak of three straight starts in which the Wolverines were shut out by Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan State. He tossed a two-hit shutout in the Big Ten opener vs. Iowa, his third career complete-game win over the Hawkeyes. He has completed 18 of his 32 career starts after serving as closer as a freshman. He has completed five of his eight starts in 2002 and finished the game in six of his 10 appearances including a save vs. Bowling Green (seventh career save). His first two wins this season were shutouts vs. Iowa and Texas-San Antonio. He earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors for the shutout win at UTSA in which he fanned a career-high 13. Korecky's losses have been at UC-Riverside, Kansas, Minnesota and Illinois and at home to MSU. Korecky is hitting .288 in 12 starts (DH-6, LF-4, 2B-2) including 5-for-6 in the twinbill at MSU. He was 4-for-4 in the second MSU game, one of three four-hit games for the Wolverines this season. He has not hit in a game he has started as a pitcher, but he did pitch in a game (at San Diego, March 1) in which he started as DH. A second team All-Big Ten performer, he earned the Geoff Zahn Award as Michigan's Most Valuable Pitcher in 2001. Korecky is second among Michigan's active pitchers with 152 career strikeouts.
- vs. Ohio State #2 (Saturday) -- Rich Hill (LHP, 2-5, 3.40 ERA) is scheduled to make his 26th career start and 40th career pitching appearance in his start vs. OSU. He fanned six in his fifth consecutive Big Ten complete game, losing 4-1 at Penn State (April 27). He fanned 11 in his 4-2 loss at MSU. Hill was named Big Ten co-Pitcher of the Week after striking out eight and walking none in a five-hit shutout at Illinois. He has 40 Big Ten strikeouts in 32 innings with pair of shutouts. Hill is sixth in Big Ten-only stats with a 2.25 ERA and he leads the Big Ten with five pickoffs, one more than teammate Bobby Korecky (4). He struck out eight in a 3-1 complete-game loss at Minnesota (April 6) and fanned seven in tossing a four-hit shutout over Iowa (March 30). He leads the team in strikeouts (73) and is second in innings pitched (54). He fanned a career-high 15 batters in a nine-inning no-decision at Texas-San Antonio (March 9). Hill took the loss in the season opener vs. Oregon State and lost to Oral Roberts. Hill reached 100 strikeouts in just 22 career appearances and he is Michigan's active career strikeout leader with 198 K's in 155 innings after leading the team in 2000 (53 strikeouts) and in 2001 (72). Hill was drafted by Cincinnati out of high school (1999) and by Anaheim in 2001.
- vs. Ohio State #3 (Saturday) -- Jim Brauer (RHP, 2-5, 6.21 ERA) would make his 16th career start in the Ohio State series. He fanned career-high nine and allowed three earned runs on seven hits in six innings for his first win as a starter in the MSU series. He earned his first win of the season in relief against Bowling Green (March 19). His losses have been vs. Penn State, Oakland, Iowa, Texas-San Antonio and San Diego. He pitched seven innings at Texas-San Antonio (March 10) after pitching six innings in each of his spring trip starts vs. San Francisco (no decision) and at San Diego (loss). He enters the OSU week fourth on the team in innings pitched (42) and third in strikeouts (36). His three wins as a freshman came out of the bullpen vs. Bowling Green, Siena Heights and Illinois and had save at South Florida. Brauer was drafted out of high school by Montreal.
- vs. Ohio State #4 (Sunday) -- Jeff Trzos (LHP, 1-4, 4.12 ERA) will make his eighth career start in the Ohio State series. Trzos lost a 1-0 complete-game decision at Penn State on an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth. He worked his third consecutive no-decision, leaving with a 3-0 lead in the ninth vs. MSU in an eventual 5-3 loss. He worked seven innings in no-decisions at Minnesota and Illinois the previous two weeks. He pitched his first career complete game in beating Iowa 4-1 in the opening-series finale (March 31). He was 0-2 on the spring with losses to Oregon State and San Diego in the first starts of his career after 40 relief outings in first three seasons. He took the third loss in relief in extra innings at Texas-San Antonio (March 9). Trzos allowed earned runs in just one of 18 appearances as the closer in 2001 and did not allow an earned run in the last 16 appearances. Trzos has 86 strikeouts in 112.2 innings pitched in Wolverine career and he owns a .260 career batting average with three homers. He was drafted out of high school by Kansas City.
Hill Nears 200th Career Strikeout
Junior LHP Rich Hill enters the Ohio State series needing two strikeouts to become the seventh Wolverine hurler to reach 200 career strikeouts. Hill fanned six in his fifth consecutive Big Ten complete game Saturday (April 27) at Penn State as he moved into seventh, passing former Major Leaguer Steve Howe (196 strikeouts, 1977-79). Hill is nearing another pair of former Major League lefties on Michigan's strikeout list as Ross Powell (201, 1987-89) ranks sixth and Gary Wayne (205, 1982-84) is fifth.
The veteran lefty Hill is 2-5 in overall action with a team-leading 3.50 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 54 innings and he has moved from 12th to seventh on Michigan's all-time strikeout list during his last two starts. The career strikeout leader is Jim Burton (288, 1969-71). Burton is tied for seventh on the career walk list (124) with Scott Kamieniecki (124, 1983-86), two more than Hill's career walk total (122, 2000-2002).

Koman Keeps Climbing Career Chart
Junior shortstop Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) enters the Ohio State week continuing his climb up Michigan's career doubles list. Koman collected two doubles and a homer in the Penn State series and drove in six runs in four games last week. He moved his career doubles total to 47, leaving him tied with Jim Paciorek (47 doubles, 1979-82) for seventh on the list. Next on the list are former teammates Ken Hayward (1982-85) and Casey Close (1983-86), who are tied for fifth with 49 doubles.
Koman leads the team in hitting (.368), has 49 career multiple-hit games and has hits in 32 of the 38 games this year. He has hits in 74 of the last 90 games in the last two seasons. He tops U-M in starts (38), at-bats (136), hits (50), doubles (13), runs (32), walks (18), HBPs (9) and on-base percentage (.472).

Koman Shares "Plunk" Mark
Junior 3B/SS Brock Koman needed just five at-bats at Penn State to tie the dubious Michigan career hit by pitch record set by co-captain Scott Tousa in 2001. Tousa was hit a record 15 times in his senior season to give him 27 HBPs in his career. Koman, who collected his 27th HBP early in the opener at PSU (April 26), enters the Ohio State series one shy of breaking the tie with Tousa. Koman leads the current Wolverine squad with nine HBPs.
The next "best/worst" single-season totals behind Tousa's 15 in 2001 are 11 by Koman in 2001 and nine by Koman this season and Sean Coston (1993-95) in 1995. Current teammate Jake Fox (Greenfield, Ind./Indianapolis Cathedral HS) enters the Ohio State series this weekend second on the team with eight.

Koman Collects Another "Gamer"
Junior 3B/SS Brock Koman collected his third game-winning RBI of the year in the 15-4 win at Penn State last Friday (April 26). It was Koman's 14th career "gamer." He led the team with nine in 2001. Junior outfielder Gino Lollio (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner HS) enters the Ohio State series leading the U-M in GWRBI with four (eight career).

Butler Still "Doing It"
Freshman CF Matt Butler (Glendale Heights, Ill./Driscoll Catholic HS) continues to impress after grabbing the starting job at the start of the Big Ten season in Minnesota. Butler had a 3-for-6 game with a pair of doubles and his leadoff double set the tone in the 15-4 win at Penn State (April 26).
Butler's 24 starts include 17 in Big Ten play and he is second on the team in conference action with a .348 average (16-for-46). He has six extra-base hits and leads the team in sacrifice bunts (4), and he is third on the team with a .404 on-base percentage and is fourth with his .500 slugging percentage in Big Ten action.
Six x Two = "Wright" Answer on Defense
Michigan's defense came close to the NCAA record by turning six double plays in the opener at Penn State last Friday (April 26) and senior/junior 1B Nate Wright (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew HS) participated in all six. The NCAA record shows three teams have turned seven so the Wolverines most likely tied a school and Big Ten record. Freshman 2B Nick Rudden (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS), who started all four games and reached base eight times, helped on defense as well on five the double plays turned behind senior RHP Bobby Korecky.
