SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team had its season come to an end Saturday (May 11), losing 4-0 to No. 14-ranked host Notre Dame in 2002 NCAA Championship first-round action held at the Courtney Tennis Center. The Wolverines (15-9) lost a tight doubles point and were unable to push through with a singles victory in losing to the Fighting Irish (22-6).
Notre Dame won a closely contested doubles point as Brent D'Amico and Luis Haddock-Morales beat sophomore Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) in an 8-6 tiebreaker at No. 3. D'Amico and Haddock-Morales won the match by a 9-8 score, while fifth-ranked Casey Smith and Javier Taborga put the Irish in position to win the team point with an 8-5 win over junior Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and sophomore Brett Baudinet (Rarotonga, Cook Islands/King's College) at No. 1. The Wolverines gained their only victory in the match as senior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./S.D.
