MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team concluded the first day of the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday night (May 17) in sixth place with six points. Senior tri-captain Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) provided all six points for the Wolverines by placing third in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 29:57.07, while junior Nick Stanko (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt HS) had his best placing ever at the Big Ten Championships with a 12th-place finish at 30:26.10.
Purdue sits in first place after two events at the Dan McClimon Track with 18 points, 10 of which came by virtue of Donovan Fellows' first-place finish in the 10,000 meters. Fellows paced the 21-person field with an NCAA provisional time of 29:41.22, followed by Minnesota's Will McComb (29:48.89) and then Wisniewski. In the final 200 meters Wisniewski was able to move up one spot in the standings by passing Wisconsin's Matt Tegenkamp, the 2001 Big Ten Freshman of the Year in cross country.
Wisniewski, the Big Ten champion in the 10,000-meter run for 2000 and 2001, will conclude his career at Michigan at the NCAA Championships (May 29-June 1) in Baton Rouge, La., after posting an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 28:55.89 at the Stanford Invitational (March 29).
The Big Ten Championships will resume on Saturday, with the first event beginning at 9:30 a.m. CDT. Freshmen Alan Webb (Reston, Va./South Lakes HS) and Nathan Brannen (Cambridge, Ontario/Preston HS) will run in the preliminaries of the 1,500- and 800-meter runs, respectively, on Saturday. Webb owns the fastest time in the Big Ten for the 1,500-meter run at 3:41.46 and Brannen has the best time in the conference for the 800-meter run at 1:47.62.
