Henry Earns Second Consecutive Coach of Year Award

Michigan was led by four Big Ten individual champions with wins by Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, West Catholic HS) in the 5,000-meter run, April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) in the hammer throw, Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS) in the 800-meter run, and Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) in the 400-meter hurdles. The Wolverines also compiled five runner-up finishes on their way to the Big Ten outdoor crown.
During the 2002 campaign, Henry's Wolverines won the indoor team title in the closest meet in the championships' 21-year history, outscoring Indiana 116-114.5 on the campus of Penn State University (Feb. 23-24).
In his 18 years at the helm of the women's track and field team Henry has led the Wolverines to eight Big Ten team championships and 60 Big Ten individual and relay titles. On a national scope, Henry has guided 53 athletes to All-America status since 1985 and took the team to a fifth-place showing at the 1998 NCAA Indoor Championships. Under his guidance the Maize and Blue accomplished the season sweep of conference hardware with both indoor and outdoor team titles on three occasions, in 1994, 1998 and 2002.
Henry won his first Big Ten title at the 1993 outdoor championships in Bloomington, Ind., earning him his first Big Ten Coach of the Years award. Henry also earned NCAA District IV Track and Field Coach of the Year honors in 1993. Henry has earned Big Ten outdoor Coach of the Year honors in 1993, 1994, 1998 and 2002. His indoor Coach of the Year awards came in 1994, 1998 and 2002.
