EVANSTON, Ill. -- University of Michigan wrestler Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edward HS) was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the 2002 University Freestyle National Championships (May 2-5) after taking first place at 74 kg with a 6-0 record. Hrovat led the field of eight Michigan wrestlers competing at the annual tournament.
Hrovat, who was the individual champion at 187.25 pounds at last year's University Freestyle National Championships, repeated the distinction by defeating Northern Illinois' Scott Owen by an 8-4 margin in the final bout.
Also representing the Wolverines in strong fashion with high finishes were junior A.J. Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS), who finished fifth at 60 kg, and freshman Greg Wagner (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider HS), who placed sixth in the Greco-Roman competition and eighth in freestyle.
