COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS), who recently completed his senior season with the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team, finished third in the open session of the 2002 U.S. Men's Gymnastics National Qualifier on Saturday (June 29) at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The National Qualifier determined which gymnasts would compete at the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships on Wednesday through Saturday, Aug. 7-10, at Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
Toman took home fifth-place honors on the horizontal bar (8.800), to go along with his third-place in the all-around (53.125). He also finished with scores above 9.0 on two events, the still rings (9.150) and the vault (9.025). He hit all six of his routines to finish in sixth place overall.
Joining Toman at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships will be two fellow Wolverines -- senior Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) and junior Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) -- who had both already qualified for the competition.
