EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Despite a two-goal effort by sophomore Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS), the University of Michigan men's soccer team lost its season opener to California-Santa Barbara 5-3 Sunday (Sept. 1) in the Michigan State Invitational at Old College Field.
Cal-Santa Barbara took a 1-0 lead 0:51 seconds into the match when Dan Young beat junior/sophomore Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) with a header from the right side. The Gauchos built a two-goal lead less than a minute later as Memo Arzate tallied his first of season on an assist from Rob Friend.
Playing in his first match with the Maize and Blue in 2002, Cameron cut the Wolverine deficit in half with his first of two headers off freshman Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) free kicks. Michigan's first goal of the 2002 season came at 15:58, when Cameron sent a header past UCSB goalkeeper Danny Kennedy, cutting the Gaucho lead to 2-1. Bruh began the play when he sent an airborne free kick over top of the UCSB wall to the 6-foot-3 Cameron.
The Gauchos built a four-goal lead in the first half though, as UCSB scored three straight goals to end the half and lead by a 5-1 score.
Michigan rebounded in the second half and cut the lead to 5-2 when Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) converted a UCSB defensive mistake. As the Gauchos were looking to clear the ball out of their zone Turpin took the ball and netted his first of the season, just 2:58 into the second period.
Bruh and Cameron hooked up again at 55:41 when the freshman found the sophomore on an airborne free kick on the right side of the five-yard box, making the score 5-3.
The Wolverines look to even their season record Monday (Sept. 2) when they face Wright State at 2:30 p.m. at the Michigan State Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.

NOTES
• Knox Cameron's two-goal game is the third in the program's three-year history. Tom Gritter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Jody Keeling accomplished the feat in 2000 and 2001, respectively.
• Cameron's two goals give him seven for his career, establishing him as the program's all-time leader in goals scored. Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Preparatory) was the previous leader with six.
• Five true freshmen saw their first action for the Maize and Blue: Adam Bruh, Ryan Sterba (Westlake, Ohio/St. Iganatius HS), Chris Glinski (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS), Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) and Trai Blanks (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS).
QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On what we take from this game ... "Hopefully a lesson was learned in this game. The lesson being each player finding his fury inside and harness that fury on the playing field. The first half we didn't play with that fury and it hurt us. We played a strong second half because we harnessed the fury and played like we know we should."
On freshman defender Chris Glinski ... "We found a true warrior in Glinski today. He showed he has true determination and played strong 90 minutes for us today."
On the return of Knox Cameron ... "We found our true starting center forward today in Cameron. He had a pair goals from that position and we have to continue to put the ball on his feet because good things happen when he is involved."
