PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Despite sophomore Mychal Turpin's (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) single-season record sixth goal, the University of Michigan men's soccer team only placed two shots on goal and lost 2-1 to Yale Sunday (Sept. 15) in its final match at the Brown Invitational.
Following a 110-minute double-overtime 3-3 tie with host Brown on Friday (Sept. 13), the Wolverines made some changes to the starting lineup. Two freshmen made their first career starts for the Maize and Blue as forward Trai Blanks (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) were on the field when the match began. Dzubay played the entire match between the pipes and finished with three saves on five Bulldog shots.
Yale took an early lead when Shannon Brooks headed in a Ryan Raybould indirect kick at 21:07. Michigan answered late in the first half as Turpin beat the Yale keeper with a 20-yard blast at 43:17, tying the match at 1-1. Sophomore midfielder Robert Wurth (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Johns Jesuit HS) set the play up seconds earlier when he found Turpin open in the slot.
The match remained tied at 1-1 for most of the second period, but with time running out Michigan was called for a foul inside its own 18-yard box, resulting in a Yale penalty kick. Andrew Dealy took the kick at 86:28 and beat Dzubay with a low kick to the left corner, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory.
Michigan looks to get back into the win column when the Wolverines return home for a pair of matches next weekend. The Maize and Blue opens the two-game homestand with a Friday night (Sept. 20) battle at Elbel Field with Oakland at 6 p.m. U-M than begins the Big Ten Conference season Sunday (Sept. 22) at 2 p.m. against No. 18 Penn State.

• With another goal against Yale Turpin is only one tally shy of fellow classmate Knox Cameron's (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) career-leading 10 goals. Turpin scored three goals as a freshman, and in five games in 2002 the sophomore has netted six.
QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "I think our team doesn't yet know what it means to be blue collar. The team we played today, Yale, is a good team who played the way we should be playing and I hope our guys learned something about that this afternoon. Yale played with better effort and work ethic. A complete game is when you combine heart, brains and guts all focused in a common goal to achieve victory. This weekend showed us we have a ways to go to be able to beat good teams on the road."
On Mychal Turpin ... "Mychal is a dynamic player that has the ability to break any game open. Unfortunately, that can be a bad thing. I call it Michael Jordan syndrome. When Jordan began his career with the Chicago Bulls his teammates would stand around and watch him do his thing when the ball was in his hands. Likewise, when Mychal has the ball our team offense is stagnant in that the rest of team doesn't attack the net because they are watching to see what he can do. If we aren't moving without the ball, we can be easily defended."
On the third-year program ... "The pieces to the puzzle are in place and my hope is that we are learning the tough lessons early so we can put the puzzle together quickly."
