PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan fifth-year senior strong safety Julius Curry (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher HS) was named Big Ten Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the U-M football team's 10-7 win over Utah (Sept. 21). This is the first weekly conference award received by Curry.
Curry tied a school record when he became only the second Wolverine in history to return eight punts in a game. He equaled the mark set by Brian Carpenter vs. Notre Dame on Sept. 19, 1981. Curry returned the eight punts for 105 yards, the fifth highest return total in school history and the third best total for a Wolverine in Michigan Stadium.

On defense Curry sparked the win over Utah with a pair of interceptions. He returned the first for a team season-high 27 yards, and the second pick stopped Utah's final drive and sealed Michigan's 10-7 win with a minute to play in the game. Curry has four career interceptions.
Curry leads the Wolverines with 14 punt returns this season for 176 yards (12.6 average). He ranks fourth in the Big Ten and 36th in the nation in punt returns.
The Wolverines (3-1) are ranked 14th in both the Associated Press and the ESPN/USA Today polls and open Big Ten action at Illinois (1-3) this Saturday (Sept. 28, 2:30 p.m. CDT) in a game shown regionally on ABC-TV.
