DAYTON, Ohio -- For the third time in the University of Michigan men's soccer series with Dayton, the home team prevailed as the Flyers defeated the Wolverines 2-0 Sunday (Sept. 29) on Dayton's Baujan Field. U-M (3-4-1) was unable to put one past Dayton goalkeeper Jason Kurdziel while freshman forward Chris Rolfe netted a pair of goals to lead the Flyers (4-3-1) to victory.

Rolfe netted his first of the game at 17:10 when he gathered a pass from Christian Porto, turned toward the goal and blasted a 20-yarder past junior/sophomore Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS). Scott Hinshaw also assisted on the goal.

Rolfe made it a 2-0 Flyer lead when he chipped a Nate Darr centering pass over the head of Zawacki from 25 yards out at 31:47.

Zawacki tied a season best with six saves on eight shots. He also made six saves in a 3-3 tie at Brown (Sept. 13). During the Wolverines' two-game weekend road trip, Zawacki made 11 saves in 168:05 minutes of action.

In three matches between Michigan and Dayton the home team has won each game. Dayton leads the three-game series 2-1 following the victory. The Flyers won the inaugural matchup 3-1 in 2000. The Wolverines' lone victory in the series came last season when the Maize and Blue defeated Dayton 2-1 on Ann Arbor Pioneer High School's Hollway Field.

The Wolverines look to get back on the winning track when they head to Bloomington, Ind., for a conference matchup with defending Big Ten champion Indiana. Last season in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals the Maize and Blue took the eventual national runners-up to triple overtime in a 1-0 loss.

On the game ... "It was a back-and-forth game. Dayton is a good team that understands its strengths and weaknesses. They did a good job in the first 15 minutes of the game, making little changes to exploit us, and we didn't make the changes to shut them down. Their freshman (Chris) Rolfe is a good player who is a flat-out goal scorer that can deal with the physical pressure of the collegiate game."

On Michigan ... "The team played with confidence but came out with a flat start, which has hurt us a few times this season. We as Michigan have a bullseye on our backs against everyone we play in every sport that we play. That is something that we are still learning. We are a big game for everyone we play and we have to come prepared to play each and every game."

On the week ahead ... "We play only once this week and it is a Big Ten match at Indiana. This is another important game for us as we continue to show that we can put together a complete game, especially on the road against a Big Ten opponent."

NOTES

• Jürgen Schmieder (Regensburg, Bavaria/Stifland Gymnasium) led the Wolverines with two shots on goal in his second consecutive start. The junior transfer scored three goals and had six shots on net during the two-game road trip.

• All three Michigan captains -- Joe Iding (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic Central HS), Robert Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) and Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) -- were in the starting lineup against Dayton. It marked the first time this season the Wolverines' tri-captain were on the field to start the game.
