ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a pair of natural hat tricks by sophomore forward Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) and junior forward Jürgen Schmieder (Regensburg, Bavaria/Stifland Gymnasium), the University of Michigan men's soccer team won its home opener against IUPUI by the score of 8-0 Friday night (Sept. 6) at Elbel Field.
In front of 1,000 home spectators, the Wolverines (2-1) tallied a school-record eight goals, six coming from Turpin and Schmieder, while the other two came via junior tri-captain Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS). The eight goals shattered Michigan's previous single-game record of five set last season in a 5-2 home win over Western Michigan (Sept. 30, 2001).
White opened the Michigan onslaught at 4:46 when he gathered his own rebound and sent it over the head of the sprawled-out IUPUI goalkeeper for a 1-0 Wolverine lead. Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) earned the assist as he found White inside the six-yard box.
Turpin's hat trick began less than 10 minutes later when Cameron found him streaking into open field 30 yards out. Cameron's pass led Turpin past the deepest IUPUI defender, leaving only the goalkeeper to beat. Turpin did so with a low line drive inside the left post, giving the Maize and Blue a 2-0 lead 14:01 into the match.
Four minutes later, at 18:11, Turpin netted his second of the night. The sophomore again found open field behind the Jaguar defense when freshman Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) delivered a forwarding pass in the center of the field. Turpin saw an opening in the left post once more and beat the keeper with a low drive, upping the score to 3-0.
Turpin's final goal came at 28:33 with another assist from Cameron. Following a pass that found Turpin at seven yards, the sophomore forward sent a hard high drive above the keeper to complete the program's first hat trick and make the score 4-0.
Just as White opened the first-half scoring, he ended it with a header to the upper right corner of the net off a line-drive corner kick by Bruh at 35:50. The goal gave Michigan a 5-0 lead entering halftime.
Coming into the second half, both teams made keeper changes. Michigan replaced junior/sophomore Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS), who turned away the lone shot he faced, with freshman Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS). In Dzubay's 36:58 minutes of action the freshman allowed zero goals while making one save on one shot. Dzubay was relieved at 81:58 by junior Rusty Herbst (Novi, Mich./Novi HS), who made one save to preserve the combined shutout.
Seeing action for the first time this season, Schmieder tallied his first collegiate goal at the 60:20 mark with a header off a Michigan indirect. Sophomore Karl Lopata (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington HS) set the play in motion with a high floater to Schmieder three yards inside the 18-yard box. Schmieder adjusted to the curving free kick and sent the ball to the left of the keeper for a 6-0 Michigan lead.
The Wolverines made it 7-0 half a minute later when Lopata and Schmieder hooked up once again. Following a steal by the Michigan defense, Lopata carried the ball into the Jaguar zone with Schmieder to his left and only one defender to beat. When the defender committed to Lopata, he sent the ball to Schmieder, who beat the keeper low and left.
Schmieder completed his hat-trick performance in his first home match when he dribbled around the diving IUPUI goalkeeper 10 yards out and sent the ball to the back of the net. Junior Ian Hirschfield (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest HS) assisted on the play.
The Wolverines have a weekend of rest before traveling to Providence R.I., next Friday and Sunday (Sept. 13-15) for matches against Ivy League opponents Brown and Yale in the Brown Invitational. Michigan battles Brown at 7:30 p.m. Friday night and Yale at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game in general ... "Well, I think that we came out and started really strong, and played really strong. When this team is putting it together, we can be a good force. We just caught them at the right time. We had a good week of training, and they were on their heels. They weren't ready for the distractions of the band and the fans. That's our home field advantage, and we love it."
On the improvements early on this season ... "We've taken a step forward; there are certainly three or four more steps to go. Guys put it together and scored attractive goals, and the team played well. A complete game is where we're headed. We didn't do a good job in the first half defending. We got casual after the third goal. I think we're always looking for perfection, but we're looking for these guys to recognize how to get to a higher level."
On freshman Jürgen Schmieder's hat trick ... "It builds his confidence. We've taken a guy out of Europe, out of a different culture, and it's going to take him some time to adjust. Does this help his confidence? Sure. Does this help him feel like he's a part of the team? Sure. If you put those two things together, you've got a guy who is, in essence, reborn. He knows that his teammates have confidence in him. He's learning to play the collegiate game, which is different from what he's used to."
On sophomores Mychal Turpin and Knox Cameron ... "There is certainly a connection between Mychal Turpin and Knox Cameron. I don't know how many of Mychal's goals Knox was involved in, but they kind of have an interchange of positions. What we're asking our front five players to do is make it difficult for the opponent's defense. That doesn't mean always running in a straight line or staying in your part of the field. It means constant overlaps and swarming and creating difficult situations for the defense to read. It's important knowing that our back five, once we lose the ball, are going to be able to hold things tight. Mychal is starting to really figure out the timing of how to get in from wherever he is on the field, and that's going to be a nice weapon all season long."
On scoring goals off restarts ... "We've done a lot of training on restarts. Restarts are an important facet of the game early on in the season. We've got a good script in place in terms of the players all knowing their roles. We've rehearsed a lot of different things, and I think the players are starting to see that that is paying off. What I like most about our restarts is we're recognizing how to get quick restarts going within the game. That's so important when you catch the other team taking a little bit of a break, clicking out of the game, thinking that they can catch their breath and get set, and suddenly the ball's coming right at him. That's a team that has a good understanding for how to gain any little tactical advantage by playing quick restarts."
