Wolverines Open Season with Win at UDM Invitational

NORTHVILLE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team opened its 2002 season with a victory in its first-ever appearance at the Running-Fit University of Detroit Mercy Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 7). Pacing the Wolverines to a 26-point total on the 5,000-meter course was junior/sophomore Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS), who finished third in the race at 18:17.
Michigan placed three other runners in the top 10, with Maize and Blue harriers finished fifth through seventh. Freshman Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves HS) placed fifth in 18:31, while sophomores Ana Gjesdal (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS) and Chelsea Loomis (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) crossed the finish line in sixth and seventh with times of 18:36 and 18:40, respectively.
Michigan's other top finishers were senior captain Jeanne Spink (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS), sophomore Sarah Pizzo (Golden, Colo./Mullen HS) and freshman Jeni Frudden (Iowa City, Iowa/West HS). Spink placed 11th at 18:58, and Pizzo crossed one second later at 18:59 for 12th. Frudden finished 14th (19:04).
The Wolverines will return to action next Saturday (Sept. 14, 10:30 a.m) at the Mel Brodt Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio.
