Coben, Mangieri Double Up as Blue Topples Northwestern

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team remained undefeated in Big Ten Conference dual-meet action with a 153-132 home victory over Northwestern on Friday night (Jan. 31) in Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines took the top spot in nine of the first 12 events and exhibitioned the final four of the meet. Heading up Michigan's top finishers was junior diver Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS), who won both the one- and three-meter springboard events with NCAA zone diving qualifying marks.

Coben nearly set another season best with a score of 347.85 in the three-meter event, earning his second victory in the Dick Kimball Diving Well. His mark was only 0.90 points shy of his season-best score of 348.75, also set at Texas. Coben's score was 36 points better than Oxman's runner-up performance of 311.40.
Senior Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) was the Wolverines' leading man in the pool with a pair of individual freestyle titles. Mangieri claimed the top spot in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles as the senior touched the wall in 21.14 and 45.88, respectively. Mangieri was also part of Michigan's fastest relay teams. He anchored the winning 400-yard medley squad (3:19.14) and swam the opening leg of the exhibitioned 400-yard freestyle relay team that posted the fastest time in the event at 3:01.95.
Fellow seniors Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS) and Josh Hack (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) and freshmen Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) and Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) were Michigan's other event winners.
Earning runner-up finishes for the Maize and Blue were seniors Mike Porth (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Jesuit HS), Ryan Earhart (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier HS), Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales HS), sophomore Nicholas Douville (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) and freshmen Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and DeJong.
Michigan closes out its dual meet schedule Saturday (Feb. 1) against Ohio State and will recognize its seven seniors who will be swimming in their final home dual meet at Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines' seven honorees will be Justin Drake (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia HS), Earhart, Hack, Hopwood, Kurth, Mangieri and co-captain Heath Novak (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny HS).
