ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team battled No. 17-ranked Purdue to a 1-1 tie in double overtime Sunday afternoon (Oct. 12) at U-M Soccer Field. Junior co-captain Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) tallied her first career goal, off a free kick in the first half, to give U-M the early advantage, but the Boilermakers (9-2-2, 5-1-1 Big Ten) were able to get on the scoreboard with just 22 seconds left in regulation to send the game to extra periods.
The Wolverines immediately moved the ball into Boilermaker territory right from the opening whistle, recording two shots in the first 30 seconds of the game. U-M continued its high-paced play throughout a majority of the first half, with junior Robyn Vince (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) making a cross to senior Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) on the far post, but her shot was stopped by Purdue goalkeeper Lauren Mason with 25:20 left until the break.
Tanchon's goal came about 15 minutes later, as Michigan was awarded a free kick at the top left of the box. Vince faked like she was going to take the kick and Tanchon was able to bend a nice shot to the left and over the head of Mason to put the Wolverines on top 1-0 with 10:19 remaining in the half.
U-M picked up where it left off in the opening minutes of the second half, with freshman Brenna Mulholland (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) taking possession at midfield and sending the ball toward Purdue's end. Sophomore Katie Kramer (Andover, Mass./Andover HS) eventually came up with the ball on the left side and fired a long shot that was just wide of the net. Seven minutes later, Vince looked to put Michigan up by two goals, but her shot from the top left of the box was stopped by a diving Mason.
The Boilermakers dominated most of the remaining minutes in regulation, outshooting U-M 11-6 in the second half. With 30 minutes left, Annette Kent fired a shot at the right post, but freshman goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) leaped and got a hand on the ball to save the goal. With 24:40 on the clock, Kent found herself with the ball again and made a nice pass to a cutting Courtney Coppedge on the left, but Tuura came up with another diving save on the near post.
Purdue continued to pepper the Michigan goal with shots for the next 10 minutes, but Tuura came up big time after time. First she made a save in front on a shot by Kelly Haxton, then made another stop on a tough strike by Kent on the right side at 11:45. With just over seven minutes to go, Purdue was presented with a one-on-one opportunity, but the shot sailed high and wide left of the goal.
With under a minute left in regulation, the Boilermakers were awarded a corner kick. Krystal Pepper took the kick and sent it toward the goal. Lauren Sesselmann got her head on the ball and finally put one past Tuura with 22 seconds left to tie the game at one goal apiece.
Neither team was able to get a shot off in the first extra period. Kramer opened the second overtime with a shot wide left. Michigan was able to keep the ball in Purdue's end of the field and was awarded a corner kick at 5:52. The kick was brought down by freshman Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS), but Mason dove left and saved the attempt at the game-winner.
Purdue's final chance to win the game came with just over two minutes left in the second overtime, as Kent got in front of the defense and put the ball in the net. However, the play was called offsides and time eventually ran out for both teams.
Michigan (3-5-6, 2-2-4 Big Ten) returns to U-M Soccer Field on Friday (Oct. 17) for a meeting with Iowa. The game is set to start at 4 p.m.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the game ... "They kept stopping the clock with their subbing of the goalkeepers. Had they not done that, the game would have been over. Purdue has great senior leadership and they made of the most of their corner kicks. When you have a team of their size, you have to do everything you can to keep the corner kicks out of our end."
On the late goal by Purdue ... "We just got outmatched and beat to the ball. It was just a nice goal by (Lauren) Sesselmann."
On playing this game after the long game on Friday against Indiana ... "I thought we had an awesome first half. We were taking control and had them on the ropes. I thought they were chasing us in the first half. So I don't think fatigue was evident at all. By the end we were pretty tired. We've played a lot of overtime games and we know what to expect."
On the strategy of splitting time between Suzie Grech and Megan Tuura in goal ... "We're going to keep doing that. Both of them have been playing great and have had their opportunities to shine in goal. They both have different strengths that we need out there."
On Laura Tanchon's goal and what it did for the team ... "We got a goal in the first half against Ohio State also. It's something we haven't done too often this season, going up 1-0. So the mood was upbeat and we were feeling confident at halftime. That does a lot for us mentally."
