MANHATTAN, Kan. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team used a final-round 320 to climb one spot into sixth place at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, held Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 13-14) at Colbert Hills Golf Course.
Michigan opened the tournament with team score of 315 but, fighting rain and fierce winds, slipped in the second round, carding a 323 to hold seventh place through the first day of competition. The Maize and Blue improved to a 320 team tally in the third round, the fourth lowest team score of the final day, to leap-frog Illinois State into sixth place with a two-day total of 958.
Junior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) and sophomore Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) guided the Wolverines late improvement, both posting their best scores of the tournament in the third round. Olin opened with rounds of 78 and 81, but shaved her score to a 77 to finish tied for 14th. Likewise, Schmucker carded disappointing rounds of 81 and 80 before rebounding with a four-over 76 on the final day to tie for 18th place.
Sophomore Brandi Zielinski (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), who competed as an individual in the tournament, tied for 26th place with a three-round score of 240 (79-82-79/240). Other Michigan scores included freshman Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) in 29th place (77-82-82/241), freshman Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), tied for 32nd (79-80-85/244) and senior/junior Courtney Goebel (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS), in 55th place (85-87-89/261).
The Wolverines will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule when they travel to Greenville, S.C., next Friday through Sunday (Oct. 24-26) for the Lady Paladin Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played at Furman University Golf Course.

U-M Head Coach Kathy Teichert
On Michigan's performance ... "It was not a great tournament for the Wolverines. We didn't putt well at all. We made a lot of mental errors. I think we let some of the elements get to us. We let the rain and the wind really effect us, and I think that hurt our confidence. Today, we posted two good rounds, but we didn't get a lot of support from the others. I saw some shots that were brillant, but I also saw a lot that were not. We haven't been able to control the consistency yet."
On preparing for next week ... "We need to mentally regroup. We need to find a way to start shooting lower scores. I don't know if we're waiting for some reason, but I know we can certainly play a lot better."
Junior Laura Olin
On the team's performance ... "The team is disappointed; we know we could have played a lot better. When we're all shooting in the 80s, that's not helping us to win. We really got ourselves in a hole after the first round and were never able to recover. Hopefully, we can learn something from this tournament about what we need to do to play better. We need to all come together, because we have proven to ourselves that we can play well."
Sophomore Amy Schmucker
On the team's performance ... "I think the team is pretty disappointed in our finish. We came in here with high expectations, and we just didn't do the things that we needed to do to finish well."
On her own performance ... "I was swinging really well; I came into this tournament feeling that my swing was intact. I wasn't making any putts though; I just couldn't get the ball in the hole."
