NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) became the University of Michigan field hockey program's career goal-scoring leader as the No. 5-ranked Wolverines dominated No. 9 Old Dominion in a 4-0 victory Friday night (Oct. 24) at ODU's Foreman Field. U-M extended its winning streak to 10 straight games with its ninth shutout of the season.
The Wolverines held a slim 1-0 advantage at halftime on the strength of Kristi Gannon's (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) marker 11:25 before intermission. Katy Moyneur (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) and Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) were credited with assists on the penalty-corner goal.
Fronzoni's goal, the 65th of her career, came unassisted 2:23 into the second half and gave her sole possession of the school record she shared with Mary Callam (1976-79).
The Wolverines, who outshot the Monarchs 15-4 in the game and 9-1 in the second half, pushed their lead to 3-0 when Anneke Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) scored on a rebound at 52:36, and Hortillosa capped the scoring with just 21 second left in the game, converting a penalty corner with assists from Laura Woitkewitsch (Cologne, Germany/Friedrich-Wilhelm) and Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican).
U-M goaltender Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) only needed to make one save to earn her sixth shutout of her rookie season and improve her record to 12-0. She has held opponents scoreless for the last 336:29 of playing time.
The Wolverines (14-3, 4-0 Big Ten) return to Big Ten Conference action on Sunday (Oct. 26) when they face No. 18 Ohio State at 2 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio. A victory would assure Michigan of at least a tie for the league championship.
