Michigan Dominates in Singles at Tom Fallon Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team began its 2003 fall season with a remarkable showing at the 17th annual Tom Fallon Invitational, held Friday through Sunday (Oct. 3-5) at Notre Dame's Eck Tennis Pavilion. The three-day event featured seven teams, including three of Michigan's 2004 dual-match opponents -- Notre Dame (March 23), Michigan State (March 31) and Purdue (April 17). The Wolverines won 20 of 26 matches in singles competition and went 3-3 in doubles play.
Four Wolverines finished the weekend with unblemished records in singles. Junior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) defeated Maryland's Chase Dawson (6-2, 6-4) and Michigan State's Anthony Stefani (6-2, 6-3) on Friday before closing out Purdue's Jamie Kish (6-1, 6-2) on Sunday. Classmate Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) posted an identical 3-0 mark, defeating No. 64-ranked Luis Haddock of Notre Dame 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(6) and Maryland's Scott Peters (6-2, 6-1) on Friday before a 6-1, 6-1 win over Purdue's David Robinson on Sunday.
Sophomore Carey Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) posted a perfect 4-0 singles record, defeating Notre Dame's Bobby McNally 6-3, 5-7, 1-0(6); Maryland's Rory Theis 6-0, 6-1; Michigan State's Mike Brown 6-3, 6-0; and Purdue's Jarred Leibner 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) had an impressive Michigan debut, also finishing with a 4-0 mark. Peretz earned his first collegiate victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Notre Dame's Patrick Buchanan before wins over Maryland's David Reichsfeld 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(7); Maryland's Michael Flowers 7-6(5), 6-3; and Alabama's Michael Green 7-5, 6-7, 1-0.
Junior Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) and freshmen Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) all split their singles matches.
In doubles action, Michigan won all three of its matches against Purdue on Saturday. Michael Rubin and Fischer scored an 8-6 victory over Foster and Filip Koziell. Heller and Hung bettered Sounak Chatterjee and Kish 8-3, while Gossain and Peretz posted an indentical 8-3 win over Robinson and Scott Warner.
The Wolverines will host the Michigan Invitaional this weekend (Friday through Sunday, Oct. 10-12) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The tournament features squads from Michigan State, Ohio State and Western Michigan.
