Three Wolverines Claim Championships at EMU Open

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Competing unattached, members of the University of Michigan wrestling team made their presence felt at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday (Nov. 1), capturing three individual titles and placing 10 wrestlers among the top six in their respective weight classes.
Fifth-year senior Clark Forward (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold HS) posted a perfect 4-0 record en route to the 141-pound individual title. Forward dominated every opponent he faced, collecting a fall, a technical fall and a pair of major decisions as he claimed the third EMU title of his career.
Junior/sophomore Ryan Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) tore through the 149-pound bracket, registering three falls, a technical fall and a major decision on his way into the final match. His toughest opposition of the tournament came in that bout as he edged out a fellow Wolverine, freshman Eric Tannenbaum (Naperville, Ill./North HS), 7-0 for the 149-pound title.
Junior/sophomore Greg Wagner (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider HS) also went undefeated in the tournament, posting a perfect 5-0 mark to capture the heavyweight title. Wagner defeated Michigan State's Michael Keenan 2-1 in the final, avenging a loss from last season's dual meet against the Spartans.
In addition to Tannenbaum, freshman Joshua Weitzel (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford HS) fell just short of capturing an individual title, posting a 4-1 record and finishing as the runner-up at 184 pounds. Weitzel collected the fastest fall of the tournament, pinning Case Western's Thomas Sanders just 15 seconds into their first-round match.
The Wolverines will send a contingent of wrestlers to the annual Michigan State Open next Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 8-9) at Jenison Field House in East Lansing, Mich.
