FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- Junior forward Dwight Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) of the University of Michigan ice hockey team was named Central Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office released Monday (Nov. 17). Helminen had three points in last weekend's two-game series against Ohio State.
With a goal and an assist in the Maize and Blue's 4-0 win on Friday night (Nov. 14), Helminen was named the game's second star. He snapped a six-game point drought with his first-period helper on freshman Mike Brown's (Northbrook, Ill.) game-winning goal. Helminen later added U-M's third tally with his second goal of the season.
Helminen chipped in a goal in a 5-2 Michigan loss on Saturday (Nov. 15). His marker 21 seconds into the game gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Helminen is Michigan's first Offensive Player of the Week winner since Mark Mink (1999-2003) earned the honor Nov. 11, 2002. This season, three other Wolverines have won CCHA weekly awards. Sophomore goaltender Al Montoya (Glenview, Ill.) was the league's top defensive player (Oct. 26), while freshmen T.J. Hensick (Howell, Mich.) and David Rohlfs (Northville, Mich.) have earned Rookie of the Week laurels.
The seventh-ranked Wolverines are idle this weekend and will resume play in the 11th annual College Hockey Showcase. The Maize and Blue play Wisconsin on Friday, Nov. 28, at Yost Ice Arena before hosting Minnesota on Saturday, Nov. 29. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:35 p.m.
