Vanderkaay Nets Second Straight Big Ten Weekly Honor

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Sophomore Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) of the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team was named the Big Ten Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday (Nov. 18). Vanderkaay posted five event titles last weekend in a two-day dual meet with No. 2 Texas, winning a pair of long-course meters races Friday (Nov. 14) and three short-course yards events Saturday (Nov. 15) in Michigan's Canham Natatorium.

During the second day of action, which was competed in short-course yards, Vanderkaay turned in three individual event titles with wins in the 1,000-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle. The 2002 Big Ten Freshman of the Year posted NCAA consideration times in both the 400 IM and the 500 free, clocking in at 3:53.73 and 4:26.99, repsectively.
Michigan has two weeks off before the Wolverines swimmers travel to the West Coast for the U.S. Open. The U.S. Open is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday (Dec. 4-6) in Federal Way, Wash. Michigan's divers will head to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Invitational (Dec. 5-7).
