This Week ...
The University of Michigan men's soccer team (14-6, 5-1 Big Ten) will play in its first NCAA College Cup Sweet 16 Sunday afternoon (Nov. 30) when they face Big East Conference champions and No. 3-ranked Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., at 1 p.m. on Alumni Field. It marks both team's first appearance in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA College Cup and first non-exhibition meeting between the two schools.

It marks the first time in Michigan's four-year history the Wolverines will participate in the NCAA College Cup. Michigan earned its first win in NCAA post-season play when the Wolverines defeated Saint Peter's College 6-2 Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 26) on the U-M Soccer Field. Michigan continues its run in the 2003 NCAA College Cup when they travel to South Bend, Ind., to face Notre Dame at 1 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 30) in the Sweet 16 of the national championship.
Scouting the Opponents ...
Notre Dame -- The Fighting Irish will play in its first ever Sweet 16 game when they host the Wolverines this Sunday (Nov. 30) at Alumni Field. The Irish advanced to the third round of the national championship tournament with a 4-1 victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee last Wednesday (Nov. 26). Leading the way for Notre Dames is Justin Detter and Devon Prescod. In 22 games this year, Detter has 31 points on 13 goals and five assists, while Prescod has 26 points on 12 goals and two assists in the same amount of games. Between the pipes, the Irish, Chris Sawyer has started everyone of his team's 22 games and has posted a record of 16-3-3 with 12 shutouts en route to a goals-against-average of 0.67 in 20:26.50 and No. 3 national ranking.
Michigan vs. Notre Dame ...
The Wolverines and Fighting Irish have never met in regular-season play, however the two program's have twice played during the exhibition season with Notre Dame holding a 2-0-1 advantage. The two team's battled to a 1-1 tie earlier this year on August 25, with Jeff Mirmelstein (Indianapolis, Ind./LawrenceCentral HS) netting the lone U-M tally.
The Last Time Out: Michigan Makes NCAA Debut a Success ...
Michigan earned its first NCAA Tournament victory in its first-ever appearance with a 6-2 triumph against St. Peter's last Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 26) in second-round action at the U-M Soccer Field. Junior Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./Univ. of Detroit Jesuit HS) scored U-M's two first-half goals, while sophomore Chris Glinski (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) added a pair of second-half tallies, including the game-winner, while sophomore Adam Bruh (Roselyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) and senior tri-captain Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) contributed a goal apiece in the second stanza. Between the pipes sophomore goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) tied a career and Michigan record with 10 saves to preserve the victory. Adding their names to the scoring line with assists were senior tri-captain Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and junior Dawson Stellberger (Crested Butte, Colo./Crested Butte Academy).
Turpin Time ...
Mychal Turpin tallied five points in the 6-2 victory over Saint Peter's in the second round of the NCAA Championship, as the junior scored the first two goals in Michigan's first appearance in the national championship tournament. Turpin netted the first of his two tallies off a header at 23:47 of the match. Turpin used his head for his second goal as well redirecting the ball into the back of the net nearly six minutes later at 29:22. Turpin earned his fifth point on an assist to Mike White for the final goal of the game at 64:48.
Glinski Gets Two ...
Chris Glinski scored his first two goals of the season in Michigan's 6-2 victory over Saint Peter's last Wednesday (Nov. 26) in the second round of the College Cup. Glinski, who entered the match with zero points through 13 games this year, scored the first of his two goals at 49:33 when he banged home a rebound that bounced off the cross bar. The goal proved to be the game-winner, the first of his career. Glinski waited only eight minutes later before he posted his second marker of the match when he snuck behind the Peacock defense to redirect an Adam Bruh free kick to give the Wolverines a 4-1 lead at that point in the match.
Mike White, White ...
Mike White tallied his first four-point game of the season last Wednesday (Nov. 26), helping U-M to a 6-2 victory over Saint Peter's in the second round of the NCAA Championship. White earned the first of his four points when he assisted on Mychal Turpin's first goal, setting the junior forward up with a nice service into the box at 23:47. White later added the game-winning assist to Chris Glinski at 49:33. The senior tri-captain scored his first NCAA Championship goal when he sent a ball to the right corner of the net as he walked in all alone at 64:48.
Sitting on the Dock of Dzubay ...
Peter Dzubay earned the first NCAA Championship victory in Michigan history as the sophomore goalkeeper turned away 10 saves in 90 minutes of play against Saint Peter's last Wednesday (Nov. 26) in the second round of the College Cup. Dzubay's 10 saves ties a career and Michigan program record. Dzubay turned away 10 opponent shots in U-M's 4-2 victory over Penn State earlier this year on October 26.
Still Sitting on the Dock of Dzubay ...
With the victory in the second round of the NCAA College Cup, Peter Dzubay became the first Wolverine to win 20 career games. Through his first two season's between the pipes for the Wolverine's Dzubay has posted a record of 20-8-1, including a mark of 12-6 in 2003. Through 20 games this season, the sophomore keeper has 97 saves in 1,646:32 for a goals-against-average of 1.42.
Here's To You Mr. Bruh ...
Adam Bruh posted his first goal, assist game as the sophomore netted his first career NCAA post season goal and assist last Wednesday (Nov. 26) in the 6-2 win over Saint Peter's. Bruh earned his first point of the game when he found a streaking Chris Glinski at 57:41. It only took Bruh 2:59 later to earn his first career College Cup goal when he lifted a free kick over the Saint Peter's keeper at 60:30. Through 20 games this year, Bruh has posted a career-best 14 points on three goals and eight assists.
Whoopie, He Scored Again ...
Kevin Taylor earned his second assist of the year when he set up Michigan's first NCAA College Cup goal at 23:47 of its 6-2 victory over Saint Peter's in the second round of the national championship tournament last Wednesday (Nov. 26). The senior tri-captain now has 14 points on six goals and two helpers in 2003.
He's Simply Stellar ...
Dawson Stellberger assist on Mychal Turpin's second goal of U-M's College Cup second round victory over Saint Peter's last Wednesday (Nov. 26) when he served a lofted ball into the box at 29:22. Stellberger now has a career-best four assists in 2003.
Big Ten's Best ...
Junior forward Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) was selected Big Ten Athlete of the Year by the coaches at the Big Ten postseason banquet (Nov. 13) in Bloomington, Ind. It marked the first Big Ten Athlete of the Year award garnered by a Wolverine in the program's four-year history. Cameron led the Big Ten in points (33), points-per-game (1.74), goals (12), goals-per-game (0.63) and game-winning goals (5).
Post Season Honorees ...
In its best season to date, Michigan placed five players on Big Ten All-Conference Teams announced at the conference's annual postseason banquet (Nov. 13). Highlighting the list of Wolverines was first team unanimous selection and Big Ten Athlete of the Year Knox Cameron. Joining Cameron on the All-Big Ten first team were senior tri-captains Kevin Taylor and Mike White and sophomore goalkeeper Peter Dzubay. Junior forward Mychal Turpin was named to the All-Big Ten second team.
Cameron With U.S. U-20's ...
Knox Cameron will not be on the roster for Sunday's match against Notre Dame, as he is currently playing for the U.S. Under-20 Men's Soccer National Team. The U-20's are participating in the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates (Nov. 22-Dec. 19). The 24-team field will be divided into six groups of four, with the top two teams in each group and the four best teams among those ranked third at the end of the first round of qualifying for the Round of 16. Cameron, as well his 19 teammates will play in travel to UAE on Saturday (Nov. 22) and conduct a week of training before they begin tournament play. The U.S. will compete in Group F and will play all three of its matches at Al-Nahyan Stadium in Adu Dhabi. The U-20's will open the tournament on Nov. 29 agiasnt Paraguay, before meeting Germany on Dec. 2 and South Korea on Dec. 5.
Setting New Standards ...
With 14 wins this season, Michigan has surpassed the program's single-season win record of 11 set last year. In 2002 the Maize and Blue finished 11-7-2. Michigan's win at Ohio State on Nov. 1 also gave U-M its program-best fifth win in Big Ten Conference play, breaking its old mark of three set during the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
I Love Gooooooooooals ...
Through 20 games this season, Michigan tallied five goals five times (UNC Greensboro, at Bowling Green, at Michigan State, vs. Wisconsin, at Penn State and vs. Saint Peter's). In those five games, the Wolverines have compiled a record of 6-0, improving their four-year program record to 15-1-1 when netting three or more goals in a game.
Honors and Awards ...
The Wolverines have been honored many times this season, as Mychal Turpin was named the College Sports Television Student-Athlete of the Week, Knox Cameron was twice named to the College Soccer News' National Team of the Week and four athletes have combined to win five Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week accolades. Cameron was selected twice as the league's Offensive Athlete of the Week, while Bobby Trybula (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller HS) and Turpin earned the honor once this season. Senior tri-captain Kevin Taylor earned the team's lone Defensive Player of the Week this season.
I Had An Awesome Time ...
In Big Ten Conference play Michigan ended the regular season as the leader in five of six offense categories. Michigan led the conference in points (44), goals scored (15), goals-per-game (2.22), assists (14) and assists-per-game (2.50). Overall, counting non-conference matches, the Wolverines led all Big Ten teams in the same five offensive categories. Headlining the lists of points (119), goals scored (40), goals-per-game (2.16), assists (38), assists-per-game (2.11).
League Leaders ...
Knox Cameron finished the regular season as the leader in nearly every Big Ten offensive category this season. Cameron led the league in shots (21), shots per game (3.50), points (13), points per game (2.17), goals (5), goals per game (0.83) and game-winning goals (3). Cameron is also second in assists (3) and assist per game (0.60). Peter Dzubay was the league leader in saves (37) and saves per game (6.17). He was also second in the conference in goals-against average with a mark of 1.31.
The Life I Love is Making Music With My Friends ...
For the second consecutive year the Michigan offense is putting up some big numbers. Through Nov. 26, the Wolverines have totaled 139 points on 47 goals and 45 assists in 20 games this season. Michigan finished as the conference leader in goals (40), goals per game (2.22) assists (40) and assists per game (2.11).
Would You Like To Supersize Your Order ...
Mychal Turpin etched his name in the Big Ten record book earlier this year when the junior striker netted his second career four-goal game. It marked the first time in conference history a player had tallied two career four-goal games. What makes it even more special is that Turpin accomplished the feat in just a two-week span. Turpin is one of only five players in league history to net four goals in a game and first since Aaron Lauber did it on Nov. 1, 2001.
Debuting at the Top of the Charts ...
The Maize and Blue made a stunning debut in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 on Oct. 20, earning a No. 11 national ranking after not even receiving a single vote the previous week. In just their fourth season as a varsity program, head coach Steve Burns' Wolverines have won have won nine of their last 11 games to improve to 13-6 overall and 5-1 in Big Ten play, good for second place in the final conference standings.
In the Polls ...
The Wolverines dropped out of the final regular-season NCAA/adidas Coaches' Poll, released Monday, Nov. 17, while Notre Dame improved to No. 3 following its victory in the Big East Conference championship game.

The Book on Burns ...
Head coach Steve Burns' Wolverines improved to 41-30-3 through 74 games as the Michigan headman, after a 6-2 route of Saint Peter's College in second round of the NCAA Championship. In 20 games this season U-M has compiled a program-best 14 wins for its first appearance in the Sweet 16. Burns' boys also set a Michigan record with five wins in conference play this season and made their first-ever appearance in the NSCAA/adidas Coaches' Pool, debuting at No. 11 in the weekly poll on Oct. 20. Since Burns took the helm in 2000, the Wolverines have bettered their record in each of his first four years. In the program's inaugural season of 2000, U-M finished with a 6-10 record, while in 2001 his club put together a mark of 10-7-1. Prior to Michigan soccer being granted varsity status on March 26, 1999, Burns was the head coach of the Michigan club team since 1993. Under his leadership, Michigan posted a 121-51-26 mark (.677 winning percentage) and made six consecutive appearances in the national club championship tournament. The team won back-to-back national championships in 1997 and 1998.
On the Horizon ...
If Michigan defeats Notre Dame, the wolverines will host the winner of Santa Clara (15-3-3) and Coastal Carolina (20-2) next weekend (Dec. 5-7) on the U-M Soccer Field. The date and time of the match will be determined following the conclusion of each Sweet 16 game.
